È un film statunitense a sfondo storico e avventuroso con Fred MacMurray, Charlton Heston e Donna Reed. È basato sul romanzo del 1943 Sacajawea of the Shoshones di Della Gould Emmons ed è ispirato alla spedizione esplorativa effettuata dai capitani Lewis e Clark ad ovest del fiume Mississippi, nel 1803[1].
Trama
Nel 1803 gli Stati Uniti acquistano dalla Francia il territorio della Louisiana, e gli ufficiali Lewis e Clark vengono incaricati di esplorarla dal Presidente Thomas Jefferson. Giunti sul posto, trovano una tribù di indiani in guerra con quella degli Scioanes (Shoshoni) e scoprono che Sacajawea, la sorella del capo, è loro prigioniera.
Clark e Sacajawea si innamorano e decidono di sposarsi a Washington. Ma l'indiana capisce subito che quello non è il suo mondo...
Produzione
Il film, diretto da Rudolph Maté su una sceneggiatura di Winston Miller e Edmund H. North e un soggetto di Della Gould Emmons (autrice del romanzo). Fu girato nel Grand Teton National Park, nel Wyoming, e nei Paramount Studios a Hollywood, in California,[2] da inizio luglio a fine agosto 1954.[1]

Il film fu distribuito con il titolo The Far Horizons negli Stati Uniti dal 20 maggio 1955[3] al cinema dalla Paramount Pictures.

Critica
L'aspetto sentimentale fa passare in secondo piano il lato avventuroso del film. Secondo il Morandini il film è caratterizzato da una "storia d'amore inutile" ma anche da un'ottima fotografia e buone scene d'azione.[4]

The Far Horizons is a 1955 American Western film directed by Rudolph Maté, starring Fred MacMurray, Charlton Heston, Donna Reed and Barbara Hale. It is about the early 19th century Lewis and Clark Expedition, which was sent by President Thomas Jefferson to survey the territory that the United States has just acquired in the Louisiana Purchase from France. They are able to overcome the dangers they encounter along the way with the help of a Shoshone woman named Sacagawea. This is currently the only major American motion picture on the Lewis and Clark Expedition (although there have been television documentaries on the subject). Many details are fictional, and the minor scene where the group reaches the Pacific Ocean reflects the low budget of the film. The film was re-released in 1962 by Citation Films Inc. as Untamed West in a double feature with Jungle Attack.- [it] I due capitani
