È il secondo film scritto e diretto da Paul Auster, preceduto da Lulu on the Bridge e dalla collaborazione con Wayne Wang in Smoke e Blue in the Face.

Il film è stato presentato in Germania il 10 febbraio 2007 al European Film Market durante il 57º Festival di Berlino e a New York il 7 settembre dello stesso anno. Fu anche presentato fuori concorso al 55º Festival di San Sebastian del 2007[1], dove Paul Auster è anche stato presidente della giuria.

Il film non è mai uscito in Italia, dunque è inedito. Il film è stato però presentato al Dedica Festival di Pordenone del 2009, dedicato a Paul Auster, nella sezione Paul Auster Marathon Movie 2, in lingua originale sottotitolato in italiano.[2]

Produzione


Il film è il risultato di una rielaborazione della sceneggiatura di un cortometraggio erotico, che Paul Auster aveva scritto in precedenza, ma che poi, non essendo essendo stato realizzato, venne inserita nella struttura narrativa de Il libro delle illusioni. Più tardi decise poi di riprendere e ampliare la sceneggiatura, per crearne poi nel 2007, il lungometraggio The inner life of Matin Frost. La vita interiore di Martin Frost è una sceneggiatura menzionata nel romanzo di Auster, Il libro delle illusioni. È uno dei film perduti di Hector Mann, il protagonista del romanzo e racconta la semplice storia di un uomo che incontra una ragazza, con cui instaura un'intensa relazione, ma che alla fine assisterà alla fuga dell'amata.

In un'intervista, parlando del film, Paul Auster ha affermato:

«Sono l’uomo che ha scritto la storia di un uomo che ha scritto la storia di un uomo che ha scritto la storia di un uomo che ha scritto una storia: perché far finta che non sia così?[3]»

Written by Paul Auster, the film is about an author who having just completed his fourth novel travels to his friends' vacant country house to spend a few weeks alone. There he meets a beautiful and mysterious woman who inspires him to write a new story. Filmed in Azenhas do Mar in Sintra, Portugal in the spring of 2006, The Inner Life of Martin Frost is Auster's fourth film as director and writer. The film premiered at the New Directors/New Films Festival on March 21, 2007, and was released in the United States on September 7, 2007.
