Michael Kelly, auch O'Kelly oder italianisiert Signor Ochelli (* 25. Dezember 1762 in Dublin; † 9. Oktober 1826 in Margate) war ein irischer Schauspieler, Opernsänger (Tenor), Komponist und Theatermanager. Er arbeitete mit Richard Sheridan zusammen und war ein Freund und Billardpartner von Mozart. Er kannte Joseph Haydn, Antonio Salieri und Giovanni Paisiello.
Kelly war der Sohn eines Dubliner Weinhändlers.[1] Nach sorgfältiger musikalischer Ausbildung und Bühnendebüt in Dublin ging Kelly 1779 bis 1783 nach Italien, wo er seine Ausbildung vervollständigte. In Neapel durfte er bei Hof singen und wurde Zeuge des Ausbruchs des Vesuvs von 1779. 1783 bis 1787 hielt er sich in Wien auf und sang am Hoftheater. 1786 spielte er die Rollen des Basilio und Don Curzio in der Erstaufführung von Die Hochzeit des Figaro.[1] Danach lebte er in London und wurde Erster Tenor am Drury Lane Theatre.[1]
Hauptquelle für sein Leben sind die mit der Hilfe von Theodore Hook entstandenen 1826 publizierten Reminiscences, ein unterhaltsames aber sachlich nicht immer zuverlässiges Memoirenwerk.[2] Das nach Notizen Kellys entstandene Buch enthält zahlreiche Angaben über Aufführungsanweisungen Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts.[1]

Michael Kelly (25 December[1] 1762 – 9 October 1826) was an Irish tenor, composer and theatrical manager who made an international career of importance in musical history.[2] One of the leading figures in British musical theatre around the turn of the nineteenth century, he was a close associate of playwright and poet Richard Brinsley Sheridan. He also became friends with musicians such as Mozart and Paisiello, and created roles for the operas of both composers. With his friend and fellow singer Nancy Storace, he was one of the first tenors of that era from Britain and Ireland to become famous in Italy and Austria. In Italy he was also known as O'Kelly[3] or even Signor Ochelli.[4] Although the primary source for his life is his Reminiscences, doubt has been cast on the reliability of his own account, and it has been said that '[a]ny statement of Kelly's is immediately suspect.'[5][es] Michael Kelly (tenor)
