Personal life
Del Barrio was raised in Topanga, California, by Argentine parents.[2][3] Del Barrio attended Crossroads School in California and was a finalist for the 2016 National YoungArts Foundation awards in the theater category.[4] They also took part in ballet while growing up.[5] Del Barrio then studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and graduated in 2019.[6][7][3][8] While studying in London they played Duke in Otis & Eunice by the Royal College of Music.[9]
Del Barrio is non-binary and uses they/he pronouns.[8][10] They realized they might be non-binary after seeing Lachlan Watson on television.[11] They chose the first name "Blu" in 2019, in honor of their favorite color from childhood.[3] Being cast as a non-binary character in Star Trek: Discovery helped them come out publicly as non-binary.[10][12]
Del Barrio speaks both English and Spanish fluently.[13]
Career
Del Barrio acted in short films and theater since the age of seven. In September 2020 it was announced that they would join the cast of Star Trek: Discovery as Adira Tal for Season 3.[3][10] Del Barrio is the first out non-binary actor in Star Trek,[10] and Adira is Star Trek’s first non-binary character.[14]
Del Barrio has named Lachlan Watson, Indya Moore, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Theo Germaine, Asia Kate Dillon, and Brigette Lundy-Paine as non-binary role models for their career.[11]
