Dolly de Leon was born and raised in Manila to parents with roots from Ilocos and Visayas. She attended the University of the Philippines Diliman, where she was mentored by the late National Artist for Theater Tony Mabesa, and finished a Bachelor of Arts in Theater in 1995. She then started acting for soap operas before moving to film, while still doing theater and soaps. Her first credit in big screen was in Shake, Rattle, and Roll III in 1991. In an interview with Variety, de Leon described theater as her "first love."[1][2][3]
For decades, de Leon has played a number of parts, mostly bit roles, in the Philippines. De Leon has also worked with noted Filipino directors, including Lav Diaz, Erik Matti, and Antoinette Jadaone.[3]
In 2018, she auditioned without an agent and got the part for a role in the international film Triangle of Sadness written and directed by Ruben Östlund which will be then screened at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Palme d'Or. Her role on this film which Variety described as "scene-stealing" is widely considered as her breakout role, locally and internationally, and is described by Deadline as "long-overdue." She consequently signed with Fusion Entertainment for management across all areas, as well as with Gersh.[4][5][6]
