Ali was brought up in Forest Gate and lives in Newham, East London. She comes from a large British-Muslim family.[2]
Ali was discovered at her school when she was 13 years old by director Sarah Gavron and casting director Lucy Pardee as they were street casting for the film Rocks.[3][4] Ali and co-star Bukky Bakray were said to have had an immediate bond and energy that translated to the screen. The actresses were given a story outline, but no dialogue, and filmed in chronological order, with the actresses working with the director Gavron and the writers, Theresa Ikoko and Claire Wilson, on the scenes. The collaborative nature of the project was such that occasionally the actresses were not even told the cameras were rolling, with the director not saying “action” or “cut”, the actresses would just naturally flow into conversation and it would be recorded. Gavron stated as director she even reshot a classroom scene which Ali told her was not working authentically.[5] The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019 and opened in Britain on 18 September 2020.[6] For her work on this film Ali was nominated at the British Academy and Film awards in the Best Supporting Actress category. Ali also won two British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), for ‘supporting actress’ and ‘most promising newcomer’, in February 2021.[7]
Ali stars in a BBC comedy short PRU about unruly adolescents in the British system - PRU stands for Pupil Referral Unit, an alternative schooling system in the UK for badly behaved students.[8] [9]
Ali is cast to be in the upcoming television series Dangerous Liaisons.[10]
