He first received recognition as Alex Alvarez in the Netflix sitcom One Day at a Time (2017–2020), which earned him various accolades. In 2019, he played John Smith in the Christian drama film Breakthrough.
Ruiz was born in Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico, and moved to Los Angeles, California, at age nine to pursue a career in acting. He has also enjoyed playing sports, especially soccer, since a young age.
Ruiz began his career acting in commercials at an early age. He moved to Los Angeles at age nine.[1]
He appeared in a television documentary in his native Puerto Rico in 2016. The following year, Ruiz received acclaim for his role as Alex Alvarez in the Netflix sitcom One Day at a Time (2017–2020), a reboot of the 1975 series of the same name.[2] In 2019, he played John Smith in the Christian drama Breakthrough.[3][4]
He identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community. Ruiz speaks fluent Spanish and English.
