Sin embargo, Darren ya se había hecho notorio con anterioridad gracias a su intervención protagonista en la película Los cañones de Navarone junto a Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven e Irene Papas, así como en algunas películas juveniles. Después de El túnel del tiempo participó como co-estrella en la serie policial T. J. Hooker, junto a William Shatner. En la serie Star Trek Deep Space Nine interpretó a partir de la sexta temporada a Vic Fontaine, un personaje holográfico muy particular, con el que también pudo desplegar sus dotes de cantante.

James William Ercolani (born June 8, 1936) known by his stage name James Darren, is an American television and film actor, television director, and singer. During the late-1950s and early-'60s, he had notable starring and supporting roles in such films as Gidget (1959) and its sequels, The Gene Krupa Story (1959), All the Young Men (1960), The Guns of Navarone (1961), and Diamond Head (1962), and was briefly promoted as a teen pop singer. Later in the 1960s he became more active in television, starring in the short-lived science fiction series The Time Tunnel (1966–1967) and taking on the recurring role of Vic Fontaine in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1998–1999).
