Participó en la liberación de Italia durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Comenzó a actuar mientras estaba en este país, y apareció en varias películas italianas. Hizo de Italia su residencia permanente, y apareció en más de cincuenta películas europeas.

Interpretó el personaje de Jerry en la película de 1948 Senza pietà, escrita por Federico Fellini y dirigida por Alberto Lattuada.

Kitzmiller es famoso por su encarnación del personaje de Quarrel en la película Dr. No.

Murió en Roma de cirrosis hepática.

John Kitzmiller (December 4, 1913 – February 23, 1965) was an American actor who worked in his native land, as well as Italy and the United Kingdom. Kitzmiller achieved his greatest fame as a popular and versatile actor in Europe, making an estimated forty European films.[2] He was the first black actor to win the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor in 1957 for his role in the Yugoslav (Slovenia) film Valley of Peace. He is best-known for his role as Quarrel in the very first EON-produced James Bond movie Dr. No.
