Grant llegó por primera vez a los Estados Unidos en 1908 de gira con un grupo de teatro. Poco después se hizo de un espacio en la industria del cine estadounidense. Fue un reconocido actor de reparto que participó en más de 100 películas. Aunque nunca fue nominado a un Oscar fue el anfitrión de los Premios de la Academia en 1931.

Continuó con su carrera actoral en el teatro. Su salud se vio seriamente dañada durante un seguidilla de presentaciones en Santa Bárbara, California. El 19 de febrero de 1952 murió a la edad de 81 años.
