In 2019, Hauser had his breakout performance as the title character in the film Richard Jewell, leading the National Board of Review to award him for best Breakthrough Performance. He portrayed Larry Hall, a serial killer, in Black Bird, the dramatic miniseries from Apple TV+ that premiered 2022, and was also seen in the TV show Kingdom.
