Biografía

Hijo de un profesor de arte, comenzó la carrera artística como pintor. Antes de dedicarse a los palcos se dedicó al periodismo. Su trayectoria comenzó en 1920 con el Grupo St. Nicholas Players y su primer papel destacable fue en la pieza El mercader de Venecia.

En los años 30 interpretó films y piezas de teatro que le dieron fama, y fue nombrado Caballero por el Rey de Inglaterra en 1947, y fue transformándose en una de las más aclamadas figuras del teatro británico. Trabajó en casi doscientas piezas y en más de cien películas, entre ellas clásicos como Ana Karenina, Éxodo (Exodus), Doctor Zhivago y Khartoum.

En el Oscar de 1984 recibió una nominación póstuma como mejor actor de reparto, por su personaje del Conde de Greystoke en el filme Greystoke, la leyenda de Tarzán, el rey de los monos.

Entre sus interpretaciones teatrales más destacadas pueden mencionarse: Peer Gynt, Falstaff, John Gabriel Borkman y Hirst en No Man's Land de Harold Pinter.

Sir Ralph David Richardson (* 19. Dezember 1902 in Cheltenham, England; † 10. Oktober 1983 in London) war ein britischer Theater- und Filmschauspieler. Neben Laurence Olivier und John Gielgud zählte er zu den führenden britischen Charakterdarstellern seiner Generation und war insbesondere mit Shakespeare-Stücken erfolgreich. Sir Ralph David Richardson (19 December 1902 – 10 October 1983) was an English actor who, with John Gielgud and Laurence Olivier, was one of the trinity of male actors who dominated the British stage for much of the 20th century. He worked in films throughout most of his career, and played more than sixty cinema roles. From an artistic but not theatrical background, Richardson had no thought of a stage career until a production of Hamlet in Brighton inspired him to become an actor. He learned his craft in the 1920s with a touring company and later the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. In 1931 he joined the Old Vic, playing mostly Shakespearean roles. He led the company the following season, succeeding Gielgud, who had taught him much about stage technique. After he left the company, a series of leading roles took him to stardom in the West End and on Broadway.
