Biografía


Stephen Rea nació en la ciudad de Belfast en 1946 en una familia protestante. Estudió en la Belfast High School y luego en la Queen's University Belfast. Tomó clases de teatro en la Abbey Theatre School. En la universidad coincidió con Neil Jordan y Stewart Parker.

Estuvo casado diecisiete años con Dolours Price, integrante del IRA, y tuvo dos hijos con ella, Danny y Oscar. Price falleció en Dublín en enero de 2013 y fue enterrada en el Cementerio de Milltown.[1][2]


Carrera


Después de trabajar en el Abbey Theatre de Dublín, se mudó a Londres.[3] En 1967, interpretó a Paddy en The Shadow of a Gunman, de Seán O'Casey, en el Mermaid Theatre.[4]

En 1980 regresó a Belfast,[3] donde fundó la Field Day Theatre Company junto con el dramaturgo Brian Friel, a quien había conocido en 1973 durante los ensayos de su obra The Freedom of the City en el Royal Court.[5][6][7] La primera obra que montó la compañía fue Translations, también de Friel, estrenada en Derry en septiembre de 1980.[7]

En 1992 fue nominado a un premio Óscar por su actuación en The Crying Game, en la que interpretó a Fergus, un terrorista del Ejército Republicano Irlandés Provisional.[5][8] Posteriormente, trabajó en películas como Interview with the Vampire (1994), Michael Collins (1996), The Butcher Boy (1997) y V for Vendetta (2006).[6]

Stephen Rea (/ˈreɪ/ ray; born 31 October 1946) is an Irish film and stage actor. Rea has appeared in films such as V for Vendetta, Michael Collins, Interview with the Vampire and Breakfast on Pluto. Rea was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for Neil Jordan's thriller The Crying Game (1992). He has had important roles in the Hugo Blick TV series The Shadow Line and The Honourable Woman, for which he won a BAFTA Award. In 2020, The Irish Times, ranked Rea the 13th greatest Irish film actor of all-time.[1]
