Contaba con una gran popularidad en Hollywood durante los años 10 y principios de los 20.[1] Su asesinato, en su casa por un disparo, el 1 de febrero de 1922, junto con otro gran escándalo de Hollywood como el juicio de Roscoe Arbuckle, condujo a un frenesí de sensacionalismo, e informes a menudo fabricados por la prensa.[2]

En 1950, en la película Sunset Boulevard, el papel de Gloria Swanson tiene el nombre de Norma Desmond haciendo referencia tanto al segundo nombre de Taylor como a uno de sus amigas, la actriz Mabel Normand.[2] A mediados de 1960 el asesinato de Taylor oficialmente se lo consideraba sin resolver cuando una confesión en el lecho de muerte en 1964 por la actriz Ella Margaret Gibson, indicaba que ella "pegó un tiro y lo mató" al director. Esta versión fue publicada en 1999 y extensamente es considerada como creíble.[2]

A popular figure in the growing Hollywood motion picture colony of the 1910s and early 1920s, Taylor directed fifty-nine silent films between 1914 and 1922 and acted in twenty-seven between 1913 and 1915.[1]
