La chanson parle d'un bonhomme de neige qui gambade avec les enfants[1].
Selon le livre The History of the Snowman, les auteurs furent inspirés par les 2 millions d'exemplaires vendus du tube de Noël Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer de Gene Autry et décidèrent d'écrire quelque chose d'aussi simple et creux (« something equally bland »)[4]. Rolling écrivit une histoire mignonne, et Nelson écrivit une bonne mélodie[3]. Ils proposèrent la chanson à Autry, et il se fut montré desireux de suivre le succès de Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer avec une autre tube de Noël[4]. Enregistrée par lui chez Columbia, la chanson atteignit la 4e place du classement country en 1950 et la 7e place du classement pop de Billboard en 1950[1] ou 1951[4].
La chanson a été rapidement reprise par de nombreux autres artistes, parmi lesquels Jimmy Durante, Nat King Cole, Guy Lombardo. Les versions de Nat King Cole et Guy Lombardo sont également entrées dans les charts américains[4].
Cette chanson a commencé l'engouement pour le personnage de Frosty le bonhomme de neige. Il y avait des jeux avec lui[4], les peluches de Frosty etc.
La chanson a aussi été notamment reprise par Jan and Dean, leur version est sortie chez Liberty Records le 22 novembre 1962 (Liberty 55522)[5].

"Frosty the Snowman" is a popular Christmas song written by Walter "Jack" Rollins and Steve Nelson, and first recorded by Gene Autry and the Cass County Boys in 1950 and later recorded by Jimmy Durante.[3] It was written after the success of Autry's recording of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" the previous year; Rollins and Nelson shopped the new song to Autry, who recorded "Frosty" in search of another seasonal hit.
