Sara Gómez Yera (* 8. November 1943 in Havanna; † 2. Juni 1974 in Havanna) war eine kubanische Filmregisseurin und Drehbuchautorin.


Leben


Gómez studierte sechs Jahre Piano am Konservatorium in Havanna und arbeitete zunächst als Journalistin für die Jugendzeitschrift Mella und die sonntägliche Beilage der Tageszeitung Hoy der Kommunistischen Partei. Ab 1961 war sie Mitarbeiterin des Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos, des neu gegründeten nationalen Filminstituts. Sie war Regieassistentin von Roberto Fandiño (Tiempo de pioneros, 1962), Tomás Gutiérrez Alea (Cumbite, 1964), Jorge Fraga (El robo, 1965) und Agnès Varda (Salut les cubains, 1963). 1962 drehte sie mit Plaza Vieja ihren ersten eigenen Kurzfilm. Ihr erstes wichtiges Werk sollte 1974 der Dokumentarspielfilm De cierta manera werden. Den Film konnte sie nicht mehr fertigstellen, sie starb im gleichen Jahr an einem akuten Asthmaanfall. Fertiggestellt wurde der Film daher von Tomás Gutiérrez Alea.[1]

Sara Gómez war eine der wenigen afrokubanischen Frauen, die im Kuba des 20. Jahrhunderts einen Spielfilm realisierten: De cierta manera von 1974 bildet ein kritisch-emanzipatorisches Werk. Der Film mischt Dokumentation und Fiktion und beleuchtet die gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen der Gesellschaft im postrevolutionären Kuba.

Sara Gómez aka Sarita Gómez (November 8, 1942 – June 2, 1974) was a Cuban filmmaker. As a member of ICAIC (Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos, in English: Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry) during her early years, she was one of only two black filmmakers in attendance. She was the institute's first and for her lifetime, Cuba's only, woman director. Gómez is known for her first and final feature-length film De Cierta Manera (One Way or Another) (1974). Gómez was a revolutionary filmmaker, concerned with representing the Afro-Cuban community, women's issues, and the treatment of the marginalized sectors of society.[1] Sara Gómez's filmmaking identifies the problems of colonialism, specifically experienced by previously marginalized communities (black people, women, poor, religious, and young people) who were unaware of the possibilities of a better future. "Exposing the roots of the world that had to be left behind and demanding the arrival of the future: her mission was to allow these communities to understand the process of what was happening in their lives, their needs, and possible departures."[2] Gómez's work highlighted inequalities of social class, as well as racial and gender discrimination. She used the lens of her camera and ethnographic knowledge to narrate histories about everyday lives in revolutionary Cuba.[3]
