В молодости работал клерком на складе, пока не представился шанс появиться на театральной сцене в водевиле.

В возрасте 30 лет начал сниматься в фильмах американской кинокомпании «Essanay Studios». Контракт с корпорацией «American Film Corporation» позволил актеру сняться во многих фильмах в главных ролях. Основное амплуа — молодой современник.

До 1924 года снялся в более чем 300 фильмах США. Особенно активно снимался до начала первой мировой войны.

Керриган умер от пневмонии в возрасте 67 лет. Похоронен на кладбище Форест-Лаун в Глендейле, северном пригороде Лос-Анджелеса.
