Premise

A teenager (Chad Lowe) is torn between his lover (Mia Sara) and a doctor (Donald Sutherland) of "powwow medicine" in 1920s Pennsylvania.

Howard K Grossman the producer started developing the project originally called THE LONG LOST FRIEND, when he was in high school in York, Pennsylvania where he was born and raised. After serving in the Coast Guard and then graduating from Emerson College he went to work in Hollywood at the Warner Bros. mail room where he met Frank Marshall who was on the lot with Peter Bogdanovich. Grossman was hired by Marshall and Bogdanovich as a P.A. on the movie AT LONG LAST LOVE and was introduced to Orson Welles by Marshall. Grossman went on to work for Welles on "The Other Side of the Wind". Grossman eventually produced projects for television including Sam Shepard's "True West" starring John Malkovich and Gary Sinise and a variety of music television specials and series. Grossman's wife, Marilyn Fiala had family living in Norway and while Grossman was in Europe producing some music videos he flew to Bergen, Norway and was introduced to top financial people who set up his company HOT International which funded APPRENTICE TO MURDER for $10 million dollars through a tax shelter program. The film was developed under the working title of The Long Lost Friend and had its principal photography begin early September, 1986, in Bergen, Norway.[2] According to the September 19, 1986 issue of Variety, the film had a budget of 10 million dollars and was entirely funded by Norwegian money.[2] Apprentice to Murder was entirely shot in Norway.[1] Production was scheduled to finish early November , 1986, but according to Screen International on November 29, 1986, the film was still filming in Norway.[2] By 1987, Grossman who had been developing another project with his long time friend and Oscar winning screenwriter John Briley (who came to Norway to meet with Grossman's company HOT) convinced Grossman and his director to change the film's title to Apprentice to Murder.[2]

Release

The film was originally set for a November 6, 1987 release.[2] The Daily Variety on December 31, 1987, that the film would have its premiere on January 2, 1988, in York, PA.[2] The New York Daily News stated that Apprentice to Murder was opening on February 27, 1988, in New York[5] while the American Film Institute stated that the film opened in New York and Los Angeles on February 26.[2]
