It is set in Spain. Employed by the secret services, Juan simultaneously works on tracking a couple involved in weapons trafficking, and on a shady job concerning the finding (or fabrication) of evidence to frame the politician Ángel Gónzalez.[1]
The film was produced by Vaca Films [es] and Proyecto Emperador AIE alongside Playtime, with participation from RTVE, Netflix and TVG and support from ICAA, AGADIC [gl] and MEDIA.[1]
In April 2021, Vaca Films reported the beginning of filming in Madrid.[5][6] Other shooting locations included Bilbao, A Coruña, Budapest and Panama City.[1]
Código Emperador will screen on 18 March 2022 as the opening film of the 25th Málaga Spanish Film Festival (FMCE).[7] Domestically distributed by A Contracorriente Films, it is set for a theatrical release in Spain on the same day.[8] Netflix acquired the distribution rights elsewhere.[9]
Jonathan Holland of ScreenDaily described the film as a "a high-speed, intense, and slickly packaged ride through the dark and nasty tunnels of state power".[3]
