Eka Peksha Ek (transl. One By One, Devanagari: एका पेक्षा एक) is a 1990 Indian Marathi-language comedy-drama action-mystery film directed by Sachin Pilgaonkar and produced by Satish Kulkarni. The film stars Laxmikant Berde, Sachin Pilgaonkar, Ashok Saraf, Sukanya Kulkarni, and Archana Joglekar in lead roles. Based on disabilities, the film is about two friends, Kalyan and Bhanudas who are respectively deaf and blind, and are arrested by local police officer Inspector Sarjerao Shinde for a murder which they actually did not commit.

The film is adapted from Arthur Hiller's 1989 American comedy film See No Evil, Hear No Evil which was also the inspiration for Hindi movies Hum Hain Kamaal Ke and Pyare Mohan, Tamil movie Andipatti Arasampatti, and Kannada movies Akka Pakka and Baduku Jataka Bandi.

Plot

Bhanudas Mahimkar (Sachin Pilgaonkar), a blind man, and Kalyan Nashikkar (Laxmikant Berde), a deaf man, meet when Bhanudas visits Kalyan's footwear shop to join as his assistant. Despite being deaf, Kalyan understands people's conversations by reading lips. He refuses to hire Bhanudas due to his lack of sight and throws him out of the shop. Kalyan is having an affair with his girlfriend Manda Mahimkar (Sukanya Kulkarni) who turns out to be the sister of Bhanudas. He apologises to Bhanudas who agrees for their marriage and is hired by Kalyan at his shop. Meanwhile, Vijaykumar (Ashok Shinde) is a person who risks his life to help a criminal named Jhunjaar (Ajit Vachani). He creates a photographic film of an important plan of the Government of India and hides it in his shoes. However, he refuses to hand it over to Jhunjaar for being paid less in exchange of the film by him. Jhunjaar assigns the task of obtaining Vijaykumar's film to his henchman Pandhari Bhave (Kuldeep Pawar) and henchwoman Sona Deshpande (Archana Joglekar). Sona is a beautiful young girl who works with Pandhari unintentionally and helplessly to seek revenge from Jhunjaar and for the sake of her mother. According to their plan, the two fail to obtain the shoes of Vijaykumar who cleverly escapes from them.

One day, Bhanudas leaves his shoes inside Kalyan's shop and walks outside barefoot where he bumps into Sona and smells her perfume. Meanwhile, Vijaykumar escapes from Pandhari and visits Kalyan's shop to buy shoes. While Kalyan is busy looking for various types of shoes, Vijaykumar sees Sona and Pandhari approaching the shop and quickly wears Bhanudas's shoes. Entering the shop with Sona, Pandhari shoots Vijaykumar to his death and flees while Kalyan, whose back is turned, is unable to hear the gunshot due to his lack of hearing but notices Sona's legs walking out of the shop with the shoes worn by Vijaykumar. Bhanudas who hears the gunshot, walks into the shop and trips over Vijaykumar's dead body while Kalyan picks up the gun left by Pandhari. Just then, the police reach the shop and suspect the duo of committing the murder on seeing Kalyan holding the gun. Sona notices Bhanudas wearing Vijaykumar's shoes before the duo's arrest.

At the police station, Bhanudas and Kalyan are interrogated by Inspector Sarjerao Shinde (Ashok Saraf), a local police officer who takes an instant dislike to them. Meanwhile, Sona reveals to Pandhari that Vijaykumar's real shoes are with Bhanudas. In order to obtain the shoes, the two disguise themselves as attornies and assure Bhanudas and Kalyan that they will have them released. However, Bhanudas recognises the smell of Sona's perfume while Kalyan recognizes her legs. Realising that they are trapped, the two manage to escape from jail in the crowd of a protest but are caught by Sona and Pandhari on the streets. They manage to knock Pandhari out and find Sarjerao's abandoned police jeep. Bhanudas and Kalyan escape from the jeep and are chased by Sarjerao, Sona and Pandhari.

They manage to get rid of both the criminals and the police but Sarjerao ends up coming to check their house. However, he is unable to find the duo who eventually moves into the house of Manda's friend. Later, Pandhari tries to murder Sona at a strange place on Jhunjaar's threat. Bhanudas and Kalyan rescue her from him and take her to their house. Sona reveals them the truth and apologises to them, having given up the life of crime. Pandhari's yet unsuccessful attempt of obtaining the shoes and killing Sona eventually results in the kidnapping of Manda.

Meanwhile, Bhanudas and Kalyan are traced and arrested by Sarjerao who releases them on their request but keeps Sona in the police custody. The duo goes to rescue Manda but is captured by Pandhari and brought to the hideout of Jhunjaar. Jhunjaar - who is also blind - obtains Bhanudas and Kalyan's shoes but learns that they do not have the film at all. With the help of Sona, Sarjerao raids Jhunjaar's hideout and reveals that Sona had already removed the film from the duo's shoes and handed it over to him. She was thus declared as official informant by the government with a reward. Jhunjaar and Pandhari are arrested by Sarjerao and Bhanudas and Kalyan are proved innocent.

Sarjerao had got married to his wife Anuradha Shinde (Nishigandha Wad) against the wishes of her father Superintendent Vishwas Sarpotdar (Madhukar Toradmal) who is his employer. The films ends with Sarjerao having blessed with a daughter and his father-in-law taking her away, saying "You kidnapped my daughter, so now I am kidnapping your daughter."
