Plot

A financially-insecure family journey across the country while relocating from Los Angeles to Houston.

Brenda Freeman is a mother of two children, Kelly and Cam, whom are all forced to relocate after Brenda’s husband recently passed away from cancer, leaving the family in grief. Brenda’s brother, Reggie Beaumont, joins them on their move to Houston to live with their mother while they get back on their feet.

The Freeman’s begin their journey to Houston, but they eventually got into a dispute with a few rednecks, who were angry with Kelly after she flipped them off when they started flirting with her. Brenda was able to defuse the situation after apologizing to the men. The family continue on, despite this.

Meanwhile, two men were seen recovering cash from the Sinola Cartel for a man named “Mr. Cross”. However, one of the men, Harvey, realized that they were not going to get any money, despite being the ones risking their lives for it. He shoots his partner and drives off with the cash.

The Freeman’s eventually stop at a motel in Arizona, where they eavesdrop on the conversation in the room next to them. They then hear a gunshot in the other room. Brenda, who was trained in the medical field, rushes to the other room, where she finds the same man, Harvey, bleeding out after having been shot in the neck. Brenda and Reggie attempt to save Harvey's life, but he ultimately succumbs to the gunshot wound. Reggie discovers Harvey’s bag full of cash and decides to take it secretly. After being questioned by the police the next morning, the Freeman’s leave the motel.

The local sheriff captain J.D. Hammers, arrived at the scene, but wishes to call the Freeman’s back to ask additional questions.

On the road, Brenda gets a call from Captain Hammers about a bag of money and requests that she returns to the motel to answer some questions. Brenda declines the request, expressing that she already told the police what she knew. She also gets a mysterious call from an employee of Mr. Cross, but she believes it to be a scam call. After pulling over to rest, Brenda discovers the bag of money that Reggie stole and demands that they turn around and give it back to the police, much to Reggie's dismay, as he wanted the money to help the family.

Brenda gets another call from the employee, demanding the return of their money. Seeing that it is very dangerous to hold onto it, she says that she intends to return the money, but on her own terms. She delivers the money to another motel and has it set up for Mr. Cross to take, calling them afterwards to tell them how to get the money.

Believing that she is free of the mess, Brenda takes the family to an attraction, where she and Reggie get into another argument about their future and the money. Cam excused himself to use the restroom, but is suddenly kidnapped. Brenda receives a call from Cross, demanding that she retrieve the bag of money and deliver it to where he wants her to or else he will kill Cam. Terrified, Brenda leaves Kelly in Reggie’s care at the attraction and drives off to get the bag of money and save Cam.

Brenda returns to the inn where she dropped off the money, only to discover that it is gone. Then, she notices a young woman running off with the bag in a taxi cab. Brenda pursues the car, engaging in a desperate and intense chase across the desert, eventually leading to Brenda flipping her car over. However, it turns out their pursuit ends in the middle of a trailer park that served as the hideout of a biker gang, who cover for the girl, leading to her knocking Brenda out.

Meanwhile, Reggie and Kelly anxiously wait for Brenda, concerned for her and Cam’s safety. Captain Hammers, who had finally tracked them down, warns that if they do not help him solve the case, Brenda and Cam may die. Kelly confesses their situation and Hammers offers them a ride to his ranch for safety for the time-being.

Later, Brenda remains captured by the gang, but she eventually gets free and attacks the captors. She then demands that they give her back the money for Mr. Cross. Hearing this, the captors willingly give up the money in fear of their lives. She then leaves to save Cam.

Meanwhile, Hammers, Reggie, and Kelly arrive at the former’s ranch, where he introduces them to his wife, Val. Hammers asks them to help him with something. He then opens his trunk to reveal a tied-up Cam and reveals to the Freeman’s that he is in fact, Mr. Cross, and that he had tracked them down for his money. The couple capture them and lock them in their basement.

Hammers, still under the guise of Mr. Cross, calls Brenda to deliver the cash. The three Freeman’s attempt an escape via the basement window, but a guard dog thwarts their attempts. They manage to get Hammers to go back down into the basement, where Reggie confronts him with shrewd comments. The family take this opportunity to stun Hammers and lock him downstairs. Val intervenes and managed to stab Reggie with a knife. The family were still able to overpower her and holds her at gunpoint as they attempt to secure an escape. Brenda eventually arrives and reunites with her family. They decide to drop the money on the drive-way and take their leave. The Hammers’ escape captivity and notice the money, but still pursue the Freeman’s with the intention of killing them to tie up loose ends. This results in yet again, another intense chase. Brenda attempts to fend them off by shooting at them, but the Hammers’ manage to overpower them, leading to Brenda falling out of their car. She stands in front of the Hammers’ car, demanding that they kill her in exchange for her family’s lives. Val then drives towards Brenda and attempts to run her over, but Brenda takes this opportunity to throw dynamite into their car, setting it on fire. Hammers attempts to shoot Brenda with his shotgun, but the gun discharged while aiming at Val’s head, blowing it off and accidentally killing her. Hammers crashes the car into a tree and is killed on impact, with the car exploding.

Brenda, having narrowly survived, gets back into their car and tells Reggie to drive without stopping until they reach Texas. The Freeman’s drive all the way to Texas and stop at a diner to eat and recover from their near-death experience. They all begin to eat and Reggie enthusiastically requests for them to dig in and enjoy as he will be paying for all of it. Brenda is confused by this, but Reggie reveals that after the incident with the Hammers’, Reggie took the bag of cash and declares that it now belongs to them as the Hammers’ are dead and that it no longer belongs to anyone. Brenda is still wary and tries to figure out who they can return it to, but ultimately comes around to the fact that since everyone that the money belonged to is dead, it is now theirs. The Freeman’s then celebrate over breakfast as they prepare to start their new lives.
