The film premiered at the 2012 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.[2]

McCullin was nominated for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer and Best Documentary at the 66th British Academy Film Awards.[3] It also won the award for Best Use of Footage in a Cinema Release at the 2014 Focal International Awards.[4]

It has a 100% rating, and an average rating of 7.3/10, at Rotten Tomatoes, with consensus not yet reached.[5]
