Plot

Gayathri (Urvashi) born into an impoverished Hindu Namboothiri family in Palakkad takes up the post of teaching Arabic in a school in Kozhikode. There she is supported in her decision by writer and social activist Shekharan (Murali) a widower with an only child and the manager of the school, Hajiyar (V. K. Sreeraman). The prospect of a Hindu woman teaching Arabic to Muslim students leads to communal problems mainly led by three people, Menon (Prathapachandran) who wants to take over the school management; by Hajiyar's son-in-law Azeez (Vijayaraghavan) who happened to take bribe for appointing a Muslim as Arabic teacher at the school; and the shrewd politician Chelakkadan (N. F. Varghese) who is waiting for an opportunity to unleash a communal riot and thereby reap electoral votes.

Kalpana plays a Muslim girl; Aboobackar plays man-servant at Shekharan's house; Jagadish plays a Muslim fish-seller who along with his mother played by Santha Devi support Gayathri; Kuthiravattam Pappu plays a Hindu gossip-monger who spreads malice about people; M. R. Gopakumar plays Gayathri's father a poverty-stricken temple dependent, M. S. Thripunithura plays a prominent Hindu who gets the job for Gayathri; Mamukkoya plays role of peon at the school; Santhakumari plays a disgruntled woman who suspects Gayathri of immoral motives.
