Sardar is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action-spy thriller film written and directed by P. S. Mithran, produced by S Lakshman Kumar under the banner of Prince Pictures.[2] The film stars Karthi in a dual role[3] with Raashii Khanna, Rajisha Vijayan, Chunky Pandey, Laila and Murali Sharma in prominent roles.[4][5]The film music composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, with cinematography doned by George C. Williams, and film edited by Ruben. The film marks Hindi film actor Chunky Pandey's debut in Tamil cinema, and actress Laila's comeback to cinema after sixteen years.[6][7]

Production

Development

In October 2020, sources claimed that Karthi is reported to star in new film helmed by P. S. Mithran, who directed the Vishal's Irumbu Thirai (2018) and Sivakarthikeyan's Hero (2019). The film officially announced on 14 November 2020 (on Diwali), coinciding puja at the Prince Pictures.[2]

Casting

In April 2021, Raashii Khanna was announced as lead actress to star opposite Karthi, with Simran to appear in a negative role.[11][12] Actor Chunky Panday was announced as an important role, which marks his debut in Tamil cinema.[3] In May, Rajisha Vijayan was announced as second female lead.[13] In March actress Simran opt out the project due to the sitting schedule conflicts. Instead, Laila signed the project in same month,[7] marking her returning to cinema industry after 16 years break.[10]

Filming

Then, the first day shooting was started on 26 April 2021.[14] Due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the shooting halted on 29 April 2021 after two day's shoot at Chennai.[15] The shoots resumed on January 9, 2022.[16] The makers constructed a set worth of 2 crores, planning to shoot major portions of the film on the sets in the meantime.[17][18][19] Raashii Khanna joins the sets on February 5, 2022.[20] And second schedule begins on March 19, 2022.[21] her portions filmed for 12 days in Chennai and Mumbai.[22][23] Chunky Panday's major portions were filmed in Parliament building, Azarbaijan and Georgia[24] so far the makers spend more 4 crore for the sets.[25][26]

Music

The music of the film is composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar. The first single titled "Yaerumayileri" sung by Karthi himself was released on 10 October 2022.[27]

Sardar is scheduled to release on the eve of Diwali 2022, with official announcement made on Karthi's birthday.[28]

Distribution

Distribution rights of the film for Tamil Nadu region were acquired by Red Giant Movies.[29] The Telugu states distribution rights bagged by Annapurna Studios.[30] The Karnataka region distribution rights were acquired by AV Media Consultancy.[31]

Home media

The post-theatrical streaming rights of the film were bought by Aha.[32] The satellite rights of the film were sold to Kalaignar TV, even before the shootings.[33]
