Shetland is a Scottish crime drama series made by ITV Studios for BBC Scotland and first broadcast on BBC One on 10 March 2013. Based upon the novels of Ann Cleeves and adapted for television by David Kane, who has remained a principal writer throughout, it stars Douglas Henshall as DI Jimmy Pérez. Also starring are Alison O'Donnell as DS Alison "Tosh" McIntosh, Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson and Mark Bonnar as Duncan Hunter. Lewis Howden, Erin Armstrong, Julie Graham and Anne Kidd are also principal members of the cast. Henshall won the 2016 BAFTA Scotland award for best actor and the series received the award for Best TV Drama.[1]

The stories take place largely on the eponymous archipelago, although some of the filming takes place on the Scottish mainland.[2] Most, but not all, exterior location filming takes place in Shetland; in 2021, filming of series 6 and 7 took place in Shetland in two segments, each of about six weeks’ duration. Interiors may be filmed in either Shetland or in west central Scotland.[3]

On 2 December 2019, BBC One announced that two further series were intended for 2020 and 2021 with Henshall and O’Donnell returning in their roles.[4] Production had to be postponed due to COVID-19. Series 6 broadcast began on 20 October 2021 and series 7 on 10 August 2022.

As series 7 came to a close, the voice-over announced that Shetland would return in 2023.

Production

The first series consists of two episodes, a single two-part story based on the novel Red Bones by Ann Cleeves.[5] This series was broadcast across two nights on 10 and 11 March 2013 and was produced by Sue de Beauvoir.[6] Subsequently, a second series was commissioned by the BBC. Series two was extended to contain six episodes. These were filmed in 2013 and screened in 2014. This series features three two-part stories based on Cleeves' novels Raven Black, Dead Water, and Blue Lightning. This series was produced by Peter Gallagher.[7]

Filming began in April 2015 for a third series, which began screening in January 2016.[8] This series saw a change in format; with all six episodes covering a single story, written exclusively for television.[9] This was the first series not to adapt any of Cleeves' novels.[8] Ciarán Hinds and Anna Chancellor were among the new cast members for this series.[10] A fourth series was announced by the BBC in July 2016.[11] Again, this series is a single story played out across six episodes and written exclusively for television. Stephen Walters and Neve McIntosh were among the new cast members announced for the series. It was broadcast on BBC One beginning on 13 February 2018.[12] Series 5 was broadcast on BBC1 from 12 February 2019.[13]

During filming, the cast and crew are usually based in Glasgow[14] and other areas of mainland Scotland.[8][2] Filming often takes place in areas with landscape or buildings reminiscent of those in the Shetland Islands, such as Kilbarchan in Renfrewshire, Barrhead, where Henshall was born and grew up,[15] Ayr and Irvine, North Ayrshire. "My character’s house is actually in Kilbarchan, the interior of a couple of crofts are here [in Irvine, Ayrshire] and the police station is in Barrhead", Henshall said in a 2019 interview.[16]

Filming locations on or near Shetland have included Lerwick, the NorthLink ferry and the village of Wester Quarff, south of Lerwick.[17][18] Some filming was on Fair Isle for series 2. The Hillswick wildlife sanctuary featured in series 4.[19]

Shortly before series 7 premiered, Henshall announced that the series would be his last.[20]

Meanwhile, local journalist Sally McColl attends the Shetland Folk Festival with a group of her friends, but doesn't return home later that evening. The next day, she is found strangled to death on a kiln, in what looks like a copycat of Lizzie's murder. Pérez is forced to break the news to Drew, Sally's father and a former police officer who led the investigation into Lizzie's murder.

Tosh begins to question if Lars could somehow be involved in Sally's murder after picking up that he knew about roadworks that took place on the island a week before he arrived. A review of the CCTV footage of Sally arriving in Norway reveals that her keychain holds a memory stick which contains video footage of Lars attending an NDA meeting. Under scrutiny, Lars admits having assaulted Jo Halley but denies being involved in the murders, claiming that he was witness to the argument between Sally and another man on the night of her death, but Pérez is shocked when Lars identifies Duncan.

Jimmy realises that he has no choice but to bring Duncan in for questioning. Duncan denies murdering Lizzie and Sally, but does admit to having an affair with Donna Killick. During a review of images found on Sally's memory stick, Sandy finds a picture taken on the Unst Ferry in June 1993, shortly after Lizzie was murdered, that seemingly identifies the killer. When Duncan's DNA matches the sample found on Lizzie's scarf, Jimmy is forced to break the news to Cassie that Alan is her half-brother. After Donna confesses to the murder, Drew McColl tells Pérez that he was trying to protect Donna, and that in doing so he killed his daughter, Sally. Finally cleared of both murders, Thomas suffers a fatal heart attack and dies as a free man.

Pérez quickly determines this murder has connections to a modern slave trafficking ring. The beach victim is discovered to be Daniel Ugara who was in Shetland to find his sister Zezi, both originally from Nigeria.

She is conflicted as she left them mainly in order to protect them from dangers in Nigeria.

The investigation is impeded by the interference of Fraser Creggan, a local teenager who starts a true crime blog. Pérez also suspects Fraser's father, Logan, of possibly being involved due to a prior legal case. The team learn that Eamon Gauldie, a local pipeline worker, may have evidence identifying the killer.

Fiona Bedford tells Perez that Darren was tracking her phone and probably knew about her affair with Galbraith. Tosh learns that Niven paid off Carrie McAndrew's debts just before Eamon's accident. Jimmy and Tosh look into MarieAnne Ross' disappearance and learn she was best friends with Sister Carolyn, then known as Lynn Richardson. Lynn admits she helped Galbraith, Niven, and Darren cover-up MarieAnne's death. She is then attacked while on the phone with Jimmy. Perez supports Maggie's petition to have Donna relocated from the island. Donna gets Duncan to help her commit suicide by putting her medication in her hot chocolate. Perez realises what happened but covers it up.

Lynn dies in hospital. The police arrest Bedford and Niven. It transpires Marrie-Anne died of an overdose from drugs Galbraith and Niven gave her and they buried her body in secret. Tosh discovers Niven got Carrie to tamper with the valve on the ship to give Eamon a scare. Perez realises Merran recognised her mother's doorbell ring when her father was killed: Eve murdered Alex to stop him revealing the truth about Marrie-Anne, having Sister Carolyn drive her car in Lerwick to give her an alibi, then had Niven kill Carolyn. Tosh discovers she is pregnant. Donna filed a letter with her lawyer claiming Duncan was going to kill her and make it look like suicide, and Jimmy would cover it up. Duncan turns himself in for assisting suicide to protect Jimmy, but Jimmy is arrested anyway.

It transpires their father Danny was fired from the police after stealing drugs and getting a young dealer, Pepper Waldron, killed: Pepper's uncle and cousin, Cameron and Nicole, were driving the van but there is nothing to connect them to Connor's disappearance and Perez orders them released. A body is found in the sea but it isn't Connor.

Tosh and Sandy investigate Murry Rankin, who owned a suitcase like the one the body was found in and was infatuated with Connor, and Connor's old employers the Davidsons, who were accused of dumping toxic waste. Connor's girlfriend Bryd receives a text, apparently from him, asking to meet. Next morning, she is found dead.

Bryd was killed in the same way as the first victim but it is unclear if it is the same killer. Connor's ring is found in the car where Bryd's body was hidden, which turns out to have been bought by his mentor Lloyd Anderson for art purposes. The Davidsons are caught with toxic waste and help the police find Connor's phone, by indicating last time they saw Connor. Jimmy speaks to Martin Otina, who had shown an interest in Bryd. Jimmy and Sandy identify the first victim as William Rodgers, an American visitor to the island. Tosh checks out a location on Connor's phone and finds an old caravan. She is trapped inside as a bomb goes off.

Abbie is suspicious of Martin and searches his room with help from her friend Clana, discovering a hidden camera card. Sandy learns Lloyd went to school with Rodgers under a different name.

Lloyd tells Jimmy he fled the United States after being framed for the murder of a police officer, a crime for which he'd be executed. Jimmy suspects he killed Rogers, Connor and Bryd to hide his secret. Fertiliser of the kind used in the first bomb is stolen. Abbie gives Jimmy the card from Martin's camera. Martin turns out to be DI Calvin Walker of Counter-Terrorism, who suspect Rodgers, Connor and Bryd were involved in an eco-terrorist cell. Tosh suspects a message in a library book the cell were using to communicate referred to Carol Anne Manè, a ex of Donnie's who had been asking questions about her and who works at the oil terminal, but she denies everything. The team look into families who were affected by an oil tanker disaster thirty years ago. Ally Fleet, whose family lost their shipping business, aims his boat at an oil tanker but veers away at the last minute. The explosive isn't on board.

On being convinced Connor's suicide was faked, Ally admits he, Carol Anne, Connor and Bryd were part of a plan to plant a bomb at the oil terminal and phone in a warning. The mastermind behind it was Connor's publisher, Jamie Narey, whose girlfriend was killed during an anti-oil protest. Connor got cold feet when Rodgers disappeared and was tortured by Jamie to give up the location of the explosives. Seeing the police guarding the oil company office, Jaime drives into Lerwick but hesitates to set off the bomb when he sees all the people in the town center. Jimmy and his team arrive and clear the area. When the bomb squad finds no active bomb in Jamie’s van, the team realizes that he must have a smaller bomb with him. Jamie steals a car and drives with the bomb to the coast where the tanker disaster took place. There he is shot in the shoulder by police and flings the bomb away, allowing it to explode harmlessly. He confesses to killing Connor and Bryd but not Rogers. Jimmy discovers that Lloyd's girlfriend Alison killed Rodgers who had threatened to reveal his secret. Alison confesses and is taken into custody. Not wanting to send an innocent man to be executed, Jimmy lets Lloyd go before official extradition and resigns from the police, leaving Tosh in charge.

Released on DVD in Australia, Shetland, Series 1 consists of the pilot "Red Bones" and the Series 2 episodes "Raven Black", "Dead Water" and "Blue Lightning". Series 2 contains the Series 3 episodes, Series 3 contains the Series 4 episodes, and Series 4 contains the Season 5 episodes.

Similarly, Series 5 has been released one episode per week beginning 30 April 2019.[46] In April 2019, Netflix dropped the series from its streaming service in the US.[47] Amazon has Series 1-3 available for fee purchase by episode or by season but is not included in its Prime streaming subscription.
