Easygoing San Francisco private detective Harry Wingate (Sam Elliott) gets a six-figure offer from millionaire Brutus Cathcart (Max Phipps) to travel to Australia and retrieve Cathcart's prized opal from former Irish Republican Army terrorist sharpshooter Lester McInally (Robert Culp).
