Trama

Un misterioso segnale, diramato attraverso la rete dei telefoni cellulari, penetra nelle menti di quasi tutti gli esseri umani trasformandoli in bestie assassine. Clay Riddell, disegnatore di fumetti scampato al segnale, cerca di sopravvivere con l'aiuto di alcuni superstiti e di ritrovare il figlio prima che anche questi accenda il cellulare.

Produzione

La Dimension Films aveva già acquistato i diritti per adattare il romanzo di Stephen King nel marzo 2006, ed era previsto che fosse diretto da Eli Roth dopo che quest'ultimo avesse finito le riprese di Hostel: Part II[1]; nel febbraio 2007 vengono assunti Scott Alexander e Larry Karaszewski per scrivere la sceneggiatura, ma il 10 luglio 2009 Eli Roth dichiara che non avrebbe più lavorato al film, affermando:

«C'è stata una divergenza di vedute nel come avrebbe dovuto essere fatto il film e in quale doveva essere la trama, e lo studio voleva andare in un'altra direzione. Era molto amichevole perché si trattava dei Weinstein, hanno prodotto Bastardi senza gloria ed eravamo tutti amici. Io gli ho detto "Non sono molto interessato a fare il film in questo modo. Voi andate pure avanti e io continuerò a fare dei miei film". In seguito ho capito che sono interessato a dirigere solo storie originali scritte da me, un'altra cosa che ho imparato attraverso ciò che è accaduto.[2]»

L'11 novembre 2009 Stephen King ha annunciato di aver finito di scrivere la sceneggiatura del film, modificando il finale[3].

Riprese

Le riprese si sono svolte nel gennaio 2014 ad Atlanta, in Georgia, e sono durate 25 giorni[4] .

Cast

Nell'ottobre 2012 John Cusack è stato il primo attore ad aver annunciato di essersi unito al cast[5]; Samuel L. Jackson è stato confermato nel novembre 2013[6]. Isabelle Fuhrman ha annunciato la sua partecipazione il 5 febbraio 2014, mentre Stacy Keach è stato annunciato il giorno seguente[7].

Promozione

Il primo trailer è uscito in italiano il 7 giugno 2016.[8]

Distribuzione

Il film è stato distribuito video on demand dal 10 giugno e nelle sale statunitensi dal l'8 luglio 2016, mentre nelle sale italiane il 13 luglio dello stesso anno.[9] Il film in Italia è vietato ai minori di 14 anni.

The film is directed by Tod Williams, produced by John Cusack, with a screenplay by King and Adam Alleca. The film stars John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, and Isabelle Fuhrman. The film was released on June 10, 2016 to video on demand, prior to a limited release scheduled for July 8, 2016.[4] Cell is the second film adaptation of a King story to co-star Cusack and Jackson, after the 2007 film 1408. The film's story follows a New England artist struggling to reunite with his young son after a mysterious signal broadcast over the global cell phone network turns the majority of his fellow humans into mindless vicious animals.
