Trama
Kansas City, 1927: nell'epoca del proibizionismo Pete Kelly e la sua jazz band suonano nei vari speakeasy della città. Il gangster McCarg impone a tutte le bande il 25% degli introiti. Il batterista del gruppo, Joey, non accetta l'imposizione, e viene assassinato. Pete decide di vendicare il collega.

Jack Webb spielte in dem Film die Hauptrolle und führte Regie. In weiteren Hauptrollen sind Janet Leigh und Edmond O’Brien zu sehen. Peggy Lee stellte die alkoholkranke Jazzsängerin Rose Hopkins dar und wurde bei der Oscarverleihung 1956 für den Oscar als Beste Nebendarstellerin nominiert. Janet Leigh is featured as party girl Ivy Conrad, and Edmond O'Brien as a gangster who applies pressure to Kelly. Peggy Lee portrays alcoholic jazz singer Rose Hopkins (a performance for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role). Ella Fitzgerald makes a cameo as singer Maggie Jackson (a character played by a white actress in the radio series).
