John Carey (* 5. April 1934 in Barnes) ist ein britischer Literaturhistoriker und -kritiker. Bis 2002 war er Professor für englische Literatur am Merton College der University of Oxford.[1]

Literaturkritik

Carey war zweimal – 1982 und 2004 – Vorsitzender des Booker-Prize-Komitees und 2005 Vorsitzender der Jury des Man Booker International Prize. Er ist leitender Literaturkritiker der Londoner Sunday Times und tritt in verschiedenen britischen Radio- und Fernsehsendungen auf.

Positionen

Er gilt als Verfechter anti-elitärer Ansichten über die Hochkultur, wie er sie zum Beispiel in dem Buch „What Good Are the Arts?“ (2005) formuliert hat. Sein Werk „The Intellectuals and the Masses: Pride and Prejudice among the Literary Intelligentsia, 1880–1939“ (1992) befasste sich kritisch mit modernistischen Schriftstellern (namentlich T. S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, William Butler Yeats, D. H. Lawrence und H. G. Wells); er warf ihnen eine elitäre und misanthropische Sicht auf die Massengesellschaft vor.
