Cesar von Düben, (24 November 1819 – 18 September 1888), was a Swedish freiherr, photographer, explorer and writer. He published several travelogues during his lifetime.[1]

Biography

Cesar was born the son of Anders Gustaf von Düben[2] and Carolina Maria Eckhardt (1794–1861), a native of Swedish Pomerania, she was a daughter of typographer Johann Heinrich Eckhardt.[3]

Von Düben left Sweden in 1843 to go explore different parts of the world. He visited Mexico in 1849, Manila, Shanghai and Macau in 1853, where he first announced in the local newspaper, and started a small photography business. He then travelled to Hong Kong, where he set up the same business. Von Düben stayed longer than planned in the cities mentioned, as demand was greater than supply.[4]

In 1871, Von Düben published a travelogue on his sejours to French Guiana, California, China and the East Indies.

In 1886, Von Düben published another travelogue, Memories from Java.[5]

Von Düben married writer Augusta Lillistråle on 18 June 1860.[3]
