Mark DeCarlo is an American actor, television host, comedian, travel, internet personality, and foodie expert. He is currently known for being a contributor to WLS-TV morning show Windy City Live,[1] a locally produced Chicago program that replaced The Oprah Winfrey Show following its 2011 ending. DeCarlo has been awarded three local Emmy Awards for his work on Windy City Live.

DeCarlo's first major exposure came in 1991 when he became host of the dating game show Studs. He is also known for providing the voice of Hugh Neutron, the title character’s father in The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius for Nickelodeon and for portraying Alec Berg in the Seinfeld episode, “The Face Painter”. Mark authored “A Fork on the Road: 400 Cities, 1 Stomach” which is a comedic travelogue & cook book published by Lyons Press.[2]
DeCarlo rose to influencer-style fame on the internet in July of 2021 when Hugh Neutron became a meme-centric cult following in attempt to get the cartoon dad into the video game, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. This led to him collaborating with well known influencers and content creators across the web including creators from Canada and Australia.
Prior to Studs, DeCarlo was a host on the cable network MovieTime before it became E! Entertainment Television. Early in his career, DeCarlo was a contestant on Sale of the Century, winning $115,257 in cash and prizes, in 1985 and Tic Tac Dough in 1990. He also guest-starred as himself in an episode of Jonas and is now a regular on Windy City Live, a local morning show in the Chicago market.[3]
Mark hosted two more TV shows, Fox's extreme game show, Big Deal, and FX's late night talk show The X Show. He appeared on the game show Street Smarts in 2002, playing against Mark L. Walberg as part of a "Game Show Showdown", and lost the game with $1 to Walberg's $2. But because it was a charity episode, he still earned $500 for the M.S. Society of America. In 2005, DeCarlo starred in Sex Sells: The Making of Touché.[citation needed]
DeCarlo appeared on an episode of the show Interior Therapy with Jeff Lewis on Bravo that aired May 16, 2012. He co-hosted the TV series THIS vs THAT that premiered internationally in November 2012. He also had a small role on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm. In 2013, he hosted EconomicalECO, a how-to series that popularized ways to radically reduce the cost of living by choosing economical American products.[4]
On a 1992 episode of Studs, DeCarlo hosted Ronald Goldman, at the time an aspiring actor who become well known 2 years later after being murdered along with Nicole Brown Simpson in Los Angeles on June 12, 1994, which led to the arrest and Trial of O.J. Simpson.[5]
DeCarlo is the voice of Hugh Neutron on the Nickelodeon computer animated series The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius. His voice over career includes animated stints on Back at the Barnyard, Planet Sheen, Johnny Bravo, Handy Manny and the Thumb series of comedies: Thumb Wars, BaTThumb and Thumbtanic.[6]
Mark hosted the Travel Channel's Taste of America with Mark DeCarlo for two seasons in 2004 and 2005, and is also known as the host of the early 1990s dating game show, Studs and the short-lived 1996 game show Big Deal.
In September of 2022, DeCarlo and his wife, Yeni Álvarez, resumed travel for their podcast, A Fork on the Road, which they began in 2017 but put on hold when the Covid-19 Pandemic of 2020 happened.
Mark hosts an internet sitcom called the Boffo the Bear Show[7] via Facebook Live and YouTube. Mark plays as a pompous blue bear in Hollywood who runs his own talk show and even game show. It is a CGI realtime produced program that is a first of its kind. Programmed by Julian Sarmiento, Global Director of Virtual Production and Real-Time at FuseFX, Boffo has appeared live at comic-cons, talking to fans on his hotline and his game show as well as interviewing popular icons most notably in the animation industry. In October 2020, Mark brought on Joe Kozdra[8] of The Superverse as an intern producer to help the show in its social media marketing as well as book guests and be part of creative development.
On July 13, 2021, IGN released an announcement trailer[9] for Nickelodeon All Stars Brawl, a Smash Brothers style fighting game released that Fall Season. Despite having critical reviews and mixed reception in the past, this Nick game sparked a lot of excitement and hope in the licensed game community which was especially apparent on Twitter. The same day as the trailer's announcement, the hashtag "#HughNation" and Hugh Neutron began to trend on Twitter[10] as memes and jokes of Mark's most notable role making an appearance as a playable fighter in game. What began as a joke began to build a true, serious and backing cult following DeCarlo's character's inclusion in the game. As a result, a Discord server being a hub for his fans created by his Boffo producer (Kozdra) which further got Mark involved in the online chaos now on both Twitter and Discord [11] in which he fueled the community's desire for the character far beyond expectations and gained over 25 thousand new followers in a span of two weeks.[12] This even led to the character being announced as downloadable content for the game on May 13, 2022.
Due to the success Hugh Nation has brought to DeCarlo's online presence, he took the opportunity to get as many fans as they could involved in watching Boffo episodes[13] and staying on top of Mark's upcoming projects, roles and other career expeditions.
Mark received huge volumes of direct messages on Twitter asking him to read memes in Hugh Neutron's[14] voice after he did a few for various individuals early on in the Hugh Nation trends.[15][16] Mark then Tweeted out he had plans to set up a Boffo style Facebook Live where fans can call in and convince him why he should read the meme they ask him to voice[14] but no date has been set at this time or if he still plans to do this. He however began a Cameo account to keep the fun going.
Mark is part of running a fanbase Discord server named, "Mark DeCarlo's Hughniverse" in which he and the moderator team interact with fans in QnA's, chats, and other forms of communication on the site. It's become a hub for all sizes of creators including Canadian internet personality, Ricky Berwick. Other notable personalities who Mark has publicly been associated with include Jacksepticeye, Uncle Al, and Saltydkdan.He surpassed 50,000 followers on twitter on February 15, 2022.[17]
On May 13, 2022, IGN released a reveal trailer for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's newest DLC fighters, including Hugh Neutron[18] which DeCarlo and his fanbase, better known as #HughNation, had been rallying for since July 2021 when the game was announced officially. Alongside Hugh, who originally was slated for an unknown Summer 2022 release date, the other characters in the Universe Pack are Jenny/XJ9 Wakeman of My Life as a Teenage Robot and Rocko Rama of Rocko's Modern Life.
On August 5th, 2022, at 8pm EST / 5pm PST, Hugh Neutron released to the public as a downloadable fighter at $4.99 USD across all platforms that supported All-Star Brawl. A half hour later, DeCarlo went live with Debi Derryberry to commentate an NASB tournament to celebrate Hugh's reveal and launch. The tournament hosted 12 notable players all known for their online content creation. Hugh is the only fighter with hidden moves added to his moveset.
DeCarlo graduated from Benet Academy in 1980. He graduated from University of California, Los Angeles.[1] He married voice actress Yeni Álvarez on November 24, 2012. Being a Chicago native, he is also an avid Chicago Cubs fan as well and is often seen wearing various Cub merchandise.
