Kim Joo-yeon (Korean: 김주연; Born May 11, 1993)[1] is a South Korean musical, stage and television actress. She is best known for her role in Netflix Original Series Move to Heaven (2021) and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (2021).

Career



Early years


Kim Joo-yeon was born May 11, 1993 on Jeju, South Korea. She is the youngest of three daughters. As Jeju native, Kim was far from theater or musical exposure. Her path changed after she met art teacher Ko Seong-woo in the 3rd grade of elementary school. Kim participated as male role in her school team for national folk song competition and her team won the grand prize. The experience gradually changed her shy girl personality.[2]

Kim became interested in music after became fan of indie band Jaurim. Kim began vocal training from a teacher who was a former professor of Seoul Institute of Arts. Her teacher recommended her to an art high school. She moved from Jeju Island to Anyang, Gyeonggi-do to enroll to Anyang Arts High School.[3] She then joined the school musical club and her first experience in acting was in school musical Beauty and The Beast.[4] After finising high school, Kim moved to Seoul and enrolled in the Department of Theater and Film at Dongguk University.


Debut


Kim Joo-yeon took her first steps in Daehang-ro through her relationship with producer Kim Soo-ro, whom she met as a professor and student at Dongguk University. Kim also joined agency also built Double K Film and Theater, founded by Kim Su-ro and Kim Min-jong.

In the fall of 2015, Kim Joo-yeon debuted as theater actress with role Hwa-yi, female lead in play Taxi Driver by playwright Jang Jin.[5][6] The 12th production of play 'Taxi Driver' in 2015 was collaboration between Jang Jin and producer Kim Soo-ro as part of Kim Soo-ro’s Project.[7]

In 2016, She debut as musical actress in Musical Interview. The musical Interview, produced by Kim Soo-ro, as Curator of Hyundai Card Understage. The genre is a thriller that uncovers a murder case from 10 years ago, and tells the story of checking the truth of the case by going back and forth between the past and the present through interviews. She was double cast as Joan, an 18-year-old girl who suffered a mysterious accident, with more senior actress Moon Jin-ah.

In the same year She joined musical Peste, a Korean creative musical based on The Plague (La Peste), a novel by Albert Camus. The music was composed by Seo Taiji and arranged by Kim Seong-su. Premiered in LG Art Center, from August to October 2016, Kim did performances of role Jan by herself.[8]

In 2017, Kim Joo-yeon, reunited with producer Kim Soo-ro through encore performance of musical Interview. The musical Interview successfully completed an expedition to Tokyo, Japan. Followed by Korean adaptation of the classic play The Lower Depths by Russian dramatist Maxim Gorky. Kim played the role of Natasha, who gave a surprising twist and the best tension. Theater audience started to notice Kim. Her beauty made her nicknamed 'Daehak-ro Kim Tae-hee'.[8]

In June to October 2017, Kim joined musical The Great Catsby as supporting role Seon. The Great Catsby is based on a webtoon of the same name by Kang Do-ha. Compared to the 2015 performance, which was performed with the title RE:BOOT, it was planned to express emotions more delicately and refine the number to enhance understanding of the work. Creative teams such as director Byun Jeong-ju, music director Huh Su-hyun, choreographer Kwon Young-im, and dramaturg Oh Se-hyuk participated in this performance.[9]

She auditioned for first main role in musical for Son Na-young in the 20th production of Musical Laundry.[4] Creative musical Laundry first appeared on the stage as a graduation performance at Korea National University of Arts in 2003. This work, premiered in 2005, depicts the hardships and hardships of ordinary people centered on bookstore clerk Son Na-young and Solongo, a Mongolian migrant worker.[3]

Maybe Happy Ending 2018 Japan encore were held at the Pacifico Yokohama Conference Center Main Hall in Yokohama from May 3 to 6 and at Morinomiya Piroti Hall in Osaka from May 10 to 13. In the role of helperbot Claire, premiere actor Song Sang-eun and rookie Kim Joo-yeon, take turns on the stage. For the role of Helperbot Oliver, Yesung, Seven, and Seongje were triple-cast. Oliver's former owner, James, will be played by Kim Nam-ho and Ra-Jun.[10]

In 2018, Kim was cast as Emily in Disappear into thin air (2018), Korean adaptation on of Dissapearance play by Keralino Sandorovich (born 1963) a Japanese playwright and director.


Temple and other theater projects

In 2019 Kim was cast Mary Warren in play Trial, Korean adaptation of play by American playwright Arthur Miller, The Crucible (1953).

Jeongdong Theater present the musical Nang Rang Gisaeng (composed by Jo Eun, composer/music director Ryu Chan, director Kang Yu-mi) as the second work of create-ing in 2019. It was created based on the real person Kang Hyang-ran (姜香蘭), a gisaeng. At the age of 14, she enrolled in Hannam Kwonbeon, she became a gisaeng, and her skills were outstanding, and she was one of the most popular gisaengs at the time.[13] On June 22, 1922, an article about the first short-haired gisaeng in Joseon was published on the third page of the Dong-A Ilbo. It was about a woman who cut her hair short like a man, wore her men's suit and hat, and walked around town.[14] First woman in the short hair in Joseon.[15][16]

The performance was held at Jeongdong Theater from July 26 to August 18, 2019.

Musical Murderer (2019) is based on Georg Kaiser's play The Raft of Medusa.[17]

Kim got praised for her acting through the play Temple produced by Theater Ganda. Temple is a play based on the story of a professor at Colorado State University, Temple Grandin, who became a world-class zoologist despite being autistic. It started with the Goyang Cultural Foundation in 2019 and met with the audience through Welcome Daehakro-Welcome Theater in 2020, and another Daehakro encore performance in 2021.

Kim Joo-yeon, who appeared in Temple from the premiere, was praised as "The Temple itself" for her excellent acting. Kim also drew evaluations that she had grown a step as an actor through a dramatic change in acting that was so different from her previous works such as musicals Julie and Paul and Damian.[18]

Kim Joo-yeon was double cast as Temple with actress Park Hee-jung. Kim appeared in this work at the suggestion of director Shim Sae-in, whom she met in the play Hot Summer. To prepare for this role Kim read The Story of a Certain Autistic Man written by Temple Grandin several times. She also referenced the acting of Cho Seung-woo in the movie Marathon and Kim Hyang-gi in Innocent Witness.[18][11]

Kim Joo-yeon and Lee Ji-soo appeared in the role of Julie, wacky weaver who swallowed a magnet in musical Julie & Paul (2020).[19] The musical Julie & Paul was composer Kim Dae-ri Korean University of Arts project. It was selected from the 2015 CJ Culture Foundation Stage-Up Reading Competition. In 2017 it was selected as the 2017 Performing Arts Creation Center's new work of the year. It received high expectations from critics and was recognized for its value by being selected as the Repertoire of the Year for the 2019 Performing Arts Creation Center.[20] Produced by Yeonwoo Stage, It was performed at Daehangno Dream Art Center Hall 1 on January 10 to March 2020.[21]

Gender-blind casting as Demian - Sinclair in Musical Demian (2020) based on the novel Demian by Hermann Hesse.[22] The work is a unique two-person play in which two actors take turns taking on roles without a fixed role, in which one male and one female actor plays Sinclair or Damian. Damian also plays other characters in the novel, including Cromer, Sinclair's father, Pistorius, and Mrs. Eva. March 7 to April 26, 2020, Uniplex Building 2.[23]

In 2020 Kim did play Dear Elena (2020). Written in 1980 by Ljudmila Razumovskaya, this work poignantly reveals the inner conflict of human. On the birthday of Elena, a high school math teacher, her students Layla, Pasha, Bijael, and Baloja come to Elena’s house and ask for the key to the school vault containing the test answer sheets. Kim Joo-yeon and Lee Ah-jin were double-cast as bold and clever Layla. It was performed at Hongik University Daehangno Art Center Small Theater from June 16 to September 6, 2020.[24]

Kim Joo-yeon next project was Dream Theater Company's representative repertoire play Scramble for Love. Premiered in Daehak-ro in the fall of 2013, It depicts the story of three characters, Dong-wook, Eun-ju, and Yoon-hee, who live with the wounds they have received because of love and people. It was written and directed by Jung Hyung-seok. In the 6th encore performance the play, Kim Joo-yeon and Lee Seo-kyung were double-cast as female lead Eun-ju, who has a clear subjectivity and free-spirited personality. Dong-wook, an ordinary and indecisive high school math teacher were played by Song Yong-sik and Lee Won-jang. The play was performed at Sky Theater 2, Daehangno, Seoul from December 16 to 27, 2020.[25]

In January 2021, Kim was cast as Yun Shim-deok, the first soprano in Joseon, in the play Government Ferry (directed by Lee Ki-bum, produced by Player Sang Sang, Steps). The play is set in the Tokujumaru government ferry from Japan to Busan, and is a story that begins with the imagination that Yun Shim-deok, was alive. At an ambitious time when everyone is asleep, Hong Seok-ju, who is hiding in a boat, saves Yoon Shim-deok, who jumps into the sea, and establishes a relationship. It is a story about understanding each other, sharing friendships, and drawing each other's hopes, although there are conflicts about how they lived different lives. The play was performed at the Jayu Theater in Daehangno, Seoul.[26][27]

Whats Your Macbeef? written by Shin So-won was selected for the 2019 Juda Creative Contest use Richard Mcbeef as play in the play. The play Richard Mcbeef written by Seunghee Cho. Set in an international high school located on the outskirts of the city, in the theater class, teaher teacher Jeong Dong-woo and his students (Jin Yoo, Lee Ji-soo, and Jin Se-hee) prepare for the performance of with recommendation from the homeroom teacher Yoon Young-jun. Kim Joo-yeon participated in a full-length reading performance of the play as Jin Se-hee on June 21st 2019.[28] Directed by Kim Ji-ho, official premiere of What's Your Macbeef? was held at Dream Art Center Hall 3 from December 4 2020 to February 14, 2021. Kim Joo-yeon and other former actors who participated in the reading performance, join the official performance. Seo Hye-won and Yoo Yu-jin were triple-cast with Kim as Jin Se-hee.[29]


Screen Debut


In between her theater projects, Kim debut in television series with minor role in OCN drama series Watcher (2019).[30] In 2021 Kim cameback to small screen with two back to back KBS2 dramas, in supporting role in Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol[31] and minor role in Youth of May.[32] Followed by her cameo appearance in Netflix Original Series Move to Heaven in 2021 as Han Geu-ra’s mom.[33] After finishing her play, Kim landed roles of Ham Yung-kyung in tvN drama Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, where She played as a pregnant wife who run a mini-mart named after her daughter Bora. Kim starred opposite her Temple’s costar Yoon Seok-hyun who cast as her husband, Choi Geum-chul.[34]

Next Kim Joo-yeon confirmed her appearance in her debut film Jochiwon Commentary (produced by Blue Cucumber, directed by Choi Yang-hyun). The film is inspired by story of Hamlet, one of Shakespeare's four great tragedies. The adaptation will incorporate Korean sentiment and the local dialect of Chungcheong Province is added to maximize the tragedy.[35]


Theater Comeback


Kim made a Theater comeback as Emma in musical Vampire Arthur (2021–2022). Set in 1930 London, It’s a story of a vampire named Arthur and Emma, an illiterate poor girl, and the growth and love between them. It was held at Black Theater, Chungmu Art Center, Seoul from November 9 2021 until February 6, 2022. Created by writer Seo Hwi-won and composer Kim De-ri, it was met the audience for the first time in 2017 through the story writer's debut program 'Black and Blue Season 4'. The showcase was held on March 23 to 24, 2018. The premiere was staged at Black Theater, Chungmu Art Center, Seoul from November 30, 2018 to February 2, 2019 by director Kim Dong-yeon. In recent Vampire Arthur (2021–2022) replay, writer Park Hae-rim and music director Choi Hee-young joined as a new creative team to act as a screenwriter and music director.[36]

In March 2022, it was announced that in April 2022, Kim will do the first work of The 9th Best Plays Festival,[lower-alpha 1] play The Nature of Forgetting from British production Theater Re (director Guillaume Pigé and composer Alex Judd). When the work premiered in London in 2017, it was praised as a movement full of the blessings of life. In Korea, in 2019, it was held by the Wooran Foundation for the Performing Arts and Theater Enthusiast, and all seats were sold out, capturing the hearts of domestic audiences.[38][39] Kim performed dual roles as wife and daughter of role played by Actor Kim Ji-cheol, who took on the role of a man who loses his memory due to early dementia.[40][41]

Kim next works were two overlapping projects, play Helmet and creative musical Sylvia, Live. She was double-casts in gender-blind role Helmet B with Jeong In-jeong in fourth performance of play Helmet. The play is written by Ji Yi-sun, who wrote play Capone Trilogy and Bunker Trilogy. Directed by Kim Tae-hyung, it was performed between May 17, 2022 to August 11, 2022 in Hongik University Daehak-ro Art Center Small theater.[42]

Kim other work, creative musical Sylvia, Live, based on the story of the work, life, and meaning of death of Pulitzer Prize-winning genius poet Sylvia Plath (1932-1963). To understand Sylvia character, Kim read The Diary of Sylvia Plath and her poems. It is a representative musical of Performance Studio Production, which is centered on writer and director Jo Yoon-ji and composer Kim Seung-min. After going through the Arko-Han Ye-jong Musical Academy in 2020 and the Yes24 Stage Showcase in 2021, it was premiered as a work selected by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture in 2022. Music director Lee Han-mil and choreographer Choi Seong-dae participate as the creative team.[44][45] Kim Joo-yeon performed as Sylvia with Ju Da-on, and Choi Tae-yi who did the role since its 2020 showcase.[46] The musical Sylvia, Live was performed from July 12, 2022 to August 28, 2022 in Daehak-ro TOM 2 Building. [43]

Then Kim Joo-yeon joined the musical L'art reste, as Byeon Dong-rim., which was premiered in September 2022. L'art reste is a based on the love-life of Kim Hyang-an [ko] (1916-2004), Korean Asian Modern & Contemporary artist. It alternately told the story of Kim Hyang-an and her husband Kim Whan-ki, and flash-back to her younger self Byeon Dong-rim (Kim Hyang-an's real name) who likes coffee and music, when She fell in love with the poet Lee Sang. The play performed at Dream Art Center 2, Daehak-ro.[47]

In November 2022, Kim will be back with two plays, Clumsy People and Orphans. The play Clumsy People, written and directed by Korea's representative storyteller Jang Jin, is returning after 10 years. It’s a reunion project between Kim Joo-yeon and Jang Jin after Taxi Driver. Kim Joo-yeon, Choi Ha-yoon, and Park Ji-ye participate in the role of Yoo Hwa-yi, who is talkative and remote, but full of cheerful and lively charm. It will be performing on November 26th 2022 at Yes24 Stage 3 Hall. Clumsy People was premiered in 1995 as an entry at the Seoul Theater Festival. It was the work that made Jang Jin, 23 years old at that time, a star on Daehak-ro. It had encore performance in 2007 and 2012.[48]

In the play Orphans, in gender-blind casting, Kim Joo-yeon with fellow actors Choi Soo-jin, Hyun Seok-jun, and Shin Joo-hyeop were cast for the role of Philip. The play Orphans is representative work of American playwright Lyle Kessler, premiered in Los Angeles in 1983. At its Korean premiere in 2017 and encore in 2019, it were sold out due to constant favorable reviews and word of mouth from the audience. The play won in 2017 and 2019 Stagetalk Audience Choice Awards (SACA)[lower-alpha 2] in Best Play category.[49]
