Sabrina Annlynn Carpenter[5] (born May 11, 1999[6]) is an American singer and actress.[7][8] Carpenter made her acting debut with an appearance in the television crime show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and had a recurring role on Fox's short-lived series, The Goodwin Games, which lasted three months. She starred in the Disney Channel comedy series Girl Meets World (2014–2017); in 2016, she appeared in a television movie, Adventures in Babysitting, for the network.

Carpenter has starred in several feature films, including Horns (2013), The Hate U Give (2018), The Short History of the Long Road (2019), Clouds (2020), and Emergency (2022). She also starred in three Netflix films, Tall Girl (2019), its sequel (2022), and Work It (2020).

In 2014, her debut music single "Can't Blame a Girl for Trying" and EP of the same name were released. She released a debut album, Eyes Wide Open, in 2015 and three additional studio albums, Evolution (2016), Singular: Act I (2018), and Singular: Act II (2019). She released a fifth studio album, Emails I Can't Send, in 2022.


Early life


Carpenter was born on May 11, 1999, in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, to David and Elizabeth Carpenter, and raised in East Greenville.[1][6][9] She was raised alongside three older sisters and was homeschooled.[10] At age 10, she began posting videos on YouTube of her singing. Her father built a recording studio for her to fuel her passion for music.[10] In 2011, she placed third in a singing contest, The Next Miley Cyrus Project, run by Miley Cyrus.[11]

Acting career


Carpenter's first acting role was in 2011 in a guest role on the NBC drama series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.[11][12] Around the same time, she appeared on Chinese state-owned television station Hunan Broadcasting System's Gold Mango Audience festival, performing "Something's Got a Hold on Me".[11][13] In 2012, Carpenter had a recurring role on Fox's three-month series The Goodwin Games.[14]

She appeared in a 2013 film Horns and performed a song, "Smile", for an album, Disney Fairies: Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust";[15] the song charted on Radio Disney.[16] Her song "All You Need" appears on Sofia the First.[17] In January 2013, Carpenter was cast in a Disney Channel series Girl Meets World.[18][19] In 2015, Carpenter starred in a Disney Channel Original Movie, Further Adventures in Babysitting.[20] The same year, she also appeared in a Pasadena Playhouse production of Peter Pan and Tinker Bell: A Pirate's Christmas.[21]

In 2018, Carpenter appeared in The Hate U Give, based on the novel.[22] The film was released in October 2018. In 2018, she was cast a drama film The Short History of the Long Road.[23] In May 2018, Carpenter was included in Nylon magazine's "25 Gen Z'ers Changing The World".[24] In July 2019, she was cast in a film adaptation of The Distance From Me to You.[25] She is set to star and produce the film with Girl Meets World co-star Danielle Fishel .[26] In January 2019, Carpenter was cast in a Netflix film, Tall Girl.[27]

She was cast in Clouds, a 2020 teen drama film.[28] In April 2021, Carpenter was cast in Amazon Studios' comedy-drama thriller film Emergency, which is based on a 2018 short film of the same name.[29] In January 2022, Emergency premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival followed by a limited theatrical release and an Amazon Prime Video release in May 2022.[30] The following month, she appeared in a Netflix teen romantic comedy sequel, Tall Girl 2.[31][32]


Music career


In 2014, Carpenter launched a music career with the release of a single, "Can't Blame a Girl for Trying", which premiered on Radio Disney and was released on iTunes.[33] The song is the title track on her debut EP, released in April 2014. Carpenter is featured on the Girl Meets World theme song, "Take On The World". She performed the song "Stand Out" in the Disney Channel movie How to Build a Better Boy, which premiered in August 2014.[34] In July 2014, Carpenter contributed lead vocals to Disney Channel Circle of Stars' cover version of "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?"[35]

In February 2015, Carpenter announced her debut album, Eyes Wide Open. A debut single for it, "We'll Be the Stars", was released the previous month. "On Purpose" was released in October 2015. A second single, "Thumbs", peaked at number one on Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 singles chart.[36] In 2015, she won a Radio Disney Music Award in the category "Best Crush Song" for her song "Can't Blame a Girl For Trying".[37]

In 2017, Carpenter recorded a theme song for Andi Mack titled "Tomorrow Starts Today".[38] In April 2017, she performed the song on The Late Late Show with James Corden.[39] She collaborated with The Vamps and Mike Perry for the single "Hands", which was released in May 2017.[40] In 2017, she toured Europe with The Vamps,[41] and she did a summer tour with New Hope Club. In October 2017, Lost Kings released a single called "First Love" in which Carpenter appears.[42] Another single, "Why", was released in July 2017.[43] In 2017, Carpenter sang "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" on Lindsey Stirling's holiday album Warmer in the Winter.[44] In December 2017, Carpenter released a cover of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas".[45]

In March 2018, Carpenter released a single "Alien" with Jonas Blue. They performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that month.[46] She released a single, "Almost Love", in June 2018.[47] In October 2018, she announced the album's release date, which included two acts.[48] She performed the album's second single, "Sue Me", on Live with Kelly and Ryan and The Today Show in November 2018.[49]

In March 2019, Carpenter began a six-week tour called Singular Tour in which she performed two new songs from Singular: Act II, "Pushing 20", and "Exhale". The same month, "Pushing 20" was released as the album's lead single.[50] She is featured on Alan Walker's single "On My Way", released in March 2019.[51] "Exhale", another single, was released in May 2019.[52] In July 2019, Singular: Act II was released.[53] She released a single "In My Bed" in June 2019.[54] In July 2019, Carpenter performed on Good Morning America's Summer Concert Series, where she debuted the performances of "On My Way" and "In My Bed". She also performed "Sue Me", "Why", and the promotional single "Paris" from Act I. In June 2019, Carpenter began work on a fifth studio album.[10]

In February 2020, Carpenter released another single, "Honeymoon Fades".[55] She made a brief Broadway debut in Mean Girls.[56] On January 7, 2021, however, it was announced that Mean Girls would not reopen, ending her Broadway run.[57] In April 2020, Carpenter appeared in a charity version of "If the World Was Ending", which supported Doctors Without Borders during the COVID-19 pandemic.[58] In July 2020, Carpenter released another single, "Let Me Move You", from a Netflix film Work It in which she also starred and executive produced.[59][60] In September 2020, she appeared on a remix of "Wow".[61] In December 2020, she was named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 list in the Hollywood and entertainment category.[62] In January 2021, Carpenter announced that she had become an artist with Universal Music Group's Island Records.[63]


2021–present: Emails I Can't Send


Emails I Can't Send was released in July 2022.[64][65] That same month, Julia Michaels issued and then deleted a tweet stating that she had actually written "all of" the songs for Carpenter's Emails I Can't Send.[66] Prior to its July 2022 release, several singles from it were released. In January, 2021, she released a song, "Skin",[67], which initially was intended for Emails I Can't Send but was ultimately not included on it.[68] The song debuted at 48th on the Billboard Hot 100 and became her first entry on the chart, and peaked at 42nd on the Billboard Global 200 and in the top thirty on the US Mainstream Top 40.[69][70][71][72][73] She served as a co-creative director on the music video for the song alongside her sister Sarah.[74] In September 2021, she released "Skinny Dipping", credited as being co-written with Julia Michaels, Leroy Clampitt, and JP Saxe, with an acoustic version released the following month.[75][76] Later that month, she appeared on the third volume of Prime Video's special, Savage X Fenty Show, focused on that year's Savage X Fenty fashion show, in which she modelled.[77][78] In November 2021, she became a brand ambassador for Samsung USA as part of the company's "Team Galaxy" partnership program.[79]

Carpenter co-wrote a trio of songs, "Panic! In The Treehouse", "The Long Distance Diners", and "Dancing In The Dugout" with Clampitt and Skyler Stonestreet, and performed them for Samsung's holiday campaign in December 2021.[80][81] Later that month, Carpenter released another song, "Fast Times", co-written with John Ryan, as the second single from her then still upcoming release of Emails I Can't Send.[82][83] The following month, Carpenter conducted a kickoff concert, "An Evening with Sabrina" in New York City for Samsung's Galaxy Creator Collective event.[84][85] In April 2022, she released an exclusive line of video wallpapers in collaboration with Samsung for Galaxy smartphones.[86] In June 2022, Carpenter announced her debut fragrance in partnership with Scent Beauty, called Sweet Tooth, would be released in September 2022, with samples made available in the U.S. that month.[87][88][89]

In July 2022, she released a third single, "Vicious".[90][91] In July 2022, Emails I Can't Send debuted at 23rd on the U.S. Billboard 200 and 55th on the Canadian Albums Chart, making it Carpenter's highest entry on both charts.[92][93] A Spotifyexclusive version of the album, titled Emails I Can't Send: The Enhanced Album, featuring content of Carpenter explaining her vision behind the album and the process of writing and making it, was also released.[94] Following the album's release, she conducted a livestream concert at Samsung and Billboard's "Summer of Galaxy" annual event.[95][96] In August 2022, Carpenter announced a concert tour, the Emails I Can't Send Tour, in support of her album, set to begin in late September. It will feature 12 U.S. shows at mostly small indoor concert venues.[97][98]
