Wagner Maniçoba de Moura (Portuguese pronunciation: ['vagneɾ mani'sɔbɐ dʒi 'mowɾɐ]; born 27 June 1976) is a Brazilian actor, director, filmmaker, musician, and journalist. Besides being a well-established and acclaimed actor in Brazil, he has achieved international fame for roles in Elite Squad (2007), its sequel: Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (2010) and Elysium (2013) as Spider. He received a Golden Globe nomination for his role as Pablo Escobar in the first two seasons of the Netflix series Narcos (2015–2016).

In this Portuguese name, the first or maternal family name is Maniçoba and the second or paternal family name is Moura.

Career


Moura's biggest international project so far is the original series created by Netflix, Narcos, where he played the antagonist Pablo Escobar for the first two seasons.[1] His portrayal of Escobar led to a Golden Globe award nomination in 2016.[2] He would later return to Narcos: Mexico to direct two episodes of the third season.[3]


Personal life


Of Italian, Portuguese and Spanish origin, Moura's native language is Portuguese, but he also fluently speaks English and Spanish. For his portrayal of Pablo Escobar in Narcos, Moura took Spanish lessons, to sound more like a native speaker. Moura had to gain over 18 kilograms (40 pounds) to play the role of Pablo Escobar; after production of the second season of Narcos, Moura decided to lose the weight through an all-vegan diet.[4]

Moura practices Transcendental Meditation, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.[4]
