9-1-1: Lone Star is an American procedural drama television series focusing on the fire, police, and ambulance departments of the fictional company 126, located in Austin, Texas. The use of "Lone Star" in the name associates it with Texas, the "Lone Star State". It was created for Fox by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear. The series is a spin-off of the television series 9-1-1, and was ordered by Fox in May 2019. It premiered on January 19, 2020.[1]

In April 2020, Fox renewed the series for a second season which premiered on January 18, 2021.[2][3] In May 2021, the series was renewed for a third season which premiered on January 3, 2022.[4][5] In May 2022, the series was renewed for a fourth season which will premiere on January 2, 2023.[6]

Premise

From 9-1-1 co-creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, 9-1-1: Lone Star follows a sophisticated New York firefighter who, along with his son, relocates from Manhattan, New York to Austin, Texas. He must try to balance the duties of saving those who are at their most vulnerable and solving the problems in his own life. He is joined by other firefighters as well as members of the police department and emergency medical services. Series star Rob Lowe serves as co-executive producer.[7]

• Rob Lowe as Owen Strand, firefighter captain from New York City and T.K.'s father. He was diagnosed with lung cancer as a result of being a first responder to the September 11 attacks, in which he also lost his entire firehouse. Having rebuilt his team in New York he asked to do the same for the 126 in Austin.
• Liv Tyler as Michelle Blake (season 1): the paramedic Emergency Medical Services (EMS) captain. She is also trying to locate her sister Iris, who has been missing for three years.[8] It is revealed in the second season that she left the 126 to help homeless people with mental illness like her sister.
• Ronen Rubinstein as Tyler Kennedy "TK" Strand, a firefighter with the 126. He is a recovering opioid addict and Captain Owen's son. TK overdosed just prior to his arrival in Austin.[9] He starts a relationship with police officer Carlos Reyes. In season 2, he quit being a firefighter and became a paramedic.

Production

Development

On May 12, 2019, it was announced that Fox had given the production a series order for a 9-1-1 spin-off. 9-1-1 creator Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear would serve as executive producers along with cast member Rob Lowe.[7] Angela Bassett, who starred in the original 9-1-1 serves as an executive producer. Writer John Owen Lowe, son of Rob Lowe, also works on the show.[18][19]

On April 13, 2020, Fox renewed the series for a second season which premiered on January 18, 2021.[2][3] On May 17, 2021, Fox renewed the series for a third season which premiered January 3, 2022.[4][5] On May 16, 2022, Fox renewed the series for a fourth season.[6]

Casting

On May 12, 2019, it was announced that Rob Lowe had been cast in the series as lead role.[7] On September 11, 2019, Liv Tyler was announced to star opposite of Lowe.[8] Jim Parrack joined the cast on September 18, 2019.[10] Two days later, Ronen Rubinstein and Sierra McClain were announced to have joined the cast.[9] On September 23, 2019, Natacha Karam, Brian Michael Smith, Rafael L. Silva, and Julian Works joined the cast.[11]

On September 3, 2020, Gina Torres was cast as a series regular for the second season.[20] On September 22, 2020, Liv Tyler departed the show prior to the second season. Tyler had been commuting between her London home and Los Angeles to film the show and due to potential travel difficulties of the coronavirus pandemic and not wanting to be away from her young children for long

She asked producers to let her out of her multi-year contract. The possibility of her return was left open.[21] Lisa Edelstein was cast in a recurring role for the second season.[13] On October 8, 2020, Derek Webster joined the cast in a recurring capacity for the second season.[15] On May 25, 2021, Brianna Baker was promoted to series regular for the third season.[12] On September 28, 2022, Neal McDonough, D.B. Woodside, and Amanda Schull joined the cast in recurring capacities for the fourth season.[22]

Filming

Despite being set in Austin, Texas, nearly all filming of the series occurs in Los Angeles, California.[23] The lack of on-location filming in Austin has prompted criticism from the local film industry, claiming that Austin has the production infrastructure to host the series.[24][25]

At a sirloin eating contest a woman collapses and the EMS team diagnoses her as having hyponatremia, "water intoxication", causing a distended bladder. The team responds to a woman who fell from her seventh-floor balcony while doing yoga. Michelle, disobeying a restraining order, confronts her sister Iris's old boyfriend Dustin, while Owen gets chemotherapy and advice for dealing with his lung cancer; the two later share a bottle of tequila at the bar. Afterwards a drunken Owen assaults Dustin, but the next day Dustin agrees to help Michelle.

Meanwhile, Owen gets chemotherapy and Wayne gives him advice that impotence is a side effect; later Owen meets Zoe, a professor, and cannot get erect during sex, she advises that most erectile dysfunction can be addressed by relaxing that proves to be true. In another incident, Carlos responds to a women's shelter where a misogynist incel protests; a man hit in the head reveals to the paramedics he has CPPD (calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease), a condition characterized as extra painful arthritis. En route to the hospital he goes into cardiac arrest needing defibrillation; the treatment reacts with the man's ingested medication causing a toxic vapor which causes the ambulance crew to pass out, and the vehicle to flip. Meanwhile, Grace confronts Judd about his lack of romance; on a following night he makes it up to her. On another call at a cow breeding facility, a disgruntled customer sets a fire to distract from his theft of bull semen.

The team responds to a car trapped under a moving truck; the driver requires a field blood transfusion[lower-alpha 3] as a trauma doctor cannot get there in time. They hit it off, and play golf together, but Billy reports Owen's cancer in a bid to get his job. "Probie" Mateo is "severely dyslexic", and is on his last try to pass the Fire Department Academy test; the Americans with Disabilities Act mandates they accommodate him by offering an oral exam. Marjan is tasked with helping him study and the team helps, Mateo passes. On a call, the team encounters a bloody dog who leads them to a man crushed by his swather harvester. On another call Grace helps an older man with a flu who ingested a cloud of cremation remains while disposing of a friend's ashes.

Owen gets good news about his cancer while learning that his experimental immunotherapy drug was tested on dogs, some who were abandoned. He adopts Buttercup, a Bernese Mountain Dog who has the same kind of lung cancer, as the 126's new semi-destructive mascot. On a call to help a non-responsive woman, the team realizes she has been dead for days and her adult son needs mental health care. Grace has a call from a man with dementia who broke into his former home scaring the current armed older couple who hide in a bedroom; When the crew arrive, the elderly man has a heart attack and their young grandson shoots TK by mistake when they break into the room to help.

At a gender reveal party a man tending the grill is set afire by the cloud of powder; the stress of the ordeal sends the pregnant woman into premature labor. At the hospital TK awakens from his gun shot wounds; in recovering his tries to find meaning in his life. A man spelunking with his son gets trapped upside-down; they ease him out and lift him from the 80-foot cave. Judd's father is having difficulty living on his own so he and Grace try to help; later his father severely cuts himself falling on a glass-topped table. A young boy gets a toy car stuck up his nose but refuses to go to the hospital, Paul intervenes to get the toy out; later the team returns as his curious father got the same toy stuck up his nose.

Chaos ensues in Austin when a solar storm causes the electricity and power equipment to malfunction. The 126 team has to rescue the passengers of a light aircraft caught in the lines of high voltage electric towers while transporting a sick man for a liver transplant. During an outing with Carlos, TK questions his relationship with him after Carlos begins asking. When the malfunctioning traffic lights cause several accidents, they rush to help people before the 126 arrives. In the homeless camp, Michelle discovers that her lost sister is alive and living there. Michelle and her mother try to get her back home but she chooses to stay at the camp, despite her schizophrenia. With the lines scrambled, Grace gets a call from the damaged ISS, and manages to connect its last astronaut, dying from radiation poisoning, with his family to say goodbye. Back at the park, TK confesses his addiction to the rest of the team and that he's realized he wants to be a firefighter after all. Later, he also reconcilies with Carlos.

Although hesitant to label their relationship, Owen realizes that he still loves Gwyneth and asks her to marry him again, but she ends up giving him some life changing news–she's pregnant.

Carlos' career as a police officer is put in jeopardy when he makes a split second decision when apprehending a suspect who had robbed a bank with a bomb strapped to his chest while at the same time his father, who is a Texas Ranger, is working a similar case involving a serial bomber and gets involved with the investigation. Later on, TK, Tommy and Nancy get kidnapped by the same suspect while responding to a false pregnancy call and it's up to Owen and Carlos to track them down. Meanwhile, TK celebrates one year of sobriety but his happiness is cut short when he discovers that Gwyneth and Owen had broken up again and he learns that the baby is not Owen's baby. The episode ends with Grace and Judd getting run off the road into a lake with their lives hanging in the balance.

In 1995, a teenage Judd and his friend take a neighbors car and get into a head on collision that kills his friend. In 2012, 126 responds to a call involving an elderly woman falling on the floor. When they go to help her, the woman refuses and tells him to get out of her house. Judd soon realizes that the woman is his late friend's mother. Later on, Judd contemplates suicide but calls the prayer hotline and meets Grace. Through their numerous phone conversations, they develop a friendship and budding romance. Grace also encourages Judd to make amends to his friend's mother. In the present day, Grace and Judd get involved in a hit and run where their truck is forced off the bridge and into a lake causing them to almost drown. Soon after Judd and Grace are rescued by 126 and learn that Grace will experience memory loss and require physical therapy to walk again. The doctors also reveal to Judd that Grace is pregnant.

Owen soon reveals that he is working with Billy and Carlos's father in order to finally track down the actual serial arsonist. Meanwhile, Carlos and TK are trapped when Carlos's house goes up in flames. Also, the episode ends with Tommy discovering her husband sitting unmoving in a chair.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has an approval rating of 77% based on 13 reviews, with an average rating of 7.80/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "If not as outlandishly fun as its predecessor, 9-1-1: Lone Star still packs an entertaining punch and is a great showcase for the handsomely self-aware Rob Lowe."[71] On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 69 out of 100, based on reviews from 6 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[72]

Daniel D'Addario of Variety suggests that the series "started from the casting" but that it is not misconceived and is as solid as its predecessor, even if aspects of its conceit are "at times so utopian as to defy belief." He praises the "charismatic and inclusive ensemble" and hopes that the series will make use of them and not focus too much on its lead actor.[73] Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter called the series fun and thrilling, stating its succeeds to be a solid franchise companion, "full of explosions, infernos and death-defying stunts, but most of it is delivered in the attempted service of a more complicated series of character studies, an admirable goal not always smoothly executed."[74] Kelly Lawler of USA Today praised the ensemble cast, and said that producers Minear and Falchuck have "clearly tapped into what worked in "9-1-1," transplanted it easily to Texas and found a way to give "Lone Star" a tone and atmosphere all its own."[75] Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com wrote: "There's something almost impressively brazen about the way these shows use melodrama, embracing it like old-fashioned soap opera writers."[76] Joel Keller of Decider said " If you loved 9-1-1, you’ll love this show." Keller praised the performances of the actors and the action sequences, complimented the dialogue and the development of the characters.[77]

Amanda Bell of TV Guide rated Lone Star 3.5 out of 5 and stated the series manages to find its own identity without duplicating 9-1-1, called the series inclusive through the diversity of the characters, and said the series celebrates Texas's culture.[78] Melissa Camacho of Common Sense Media rated the series 3 out of 5 stars, complimented the depiction of positive messages and role models, stating the series highlights friendship, teamwork, and community across its characters, while noting the diverse representations.[79]

Sean O'Neal of Texas Monthly criticized the show for its stereotypical portrayal of Texas, and the "baffling" choice of Austin for a conservative Texas setting.[80]
