A Man Called Otto is an upcoming comedy-drama film directed by Marc Forster from a screenplay by David Magee. It is the second film adaptation of the 2012 novel A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, following the 2015 Swedish film of the same name written and directed by Hannes Holm. The film will star Tom Hanks in the titular role, with Mariana Treviño, Rachel Keller, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo co-starring.[2][3][4]

A Man Called Otto is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in the United States on December 25, 2022, before a wide release on January 13, 2023, by Sony Pictures Releasing.


Premise


When his wife dies and he is forced to retire from his job of nearly 40 years, grumpy 60-year-old Otto decides to kill himself. But his attempts are constantly interrupted by his boisterous new neighbors, which leads to an unlikely friendship.

Production


In September 2017, it was announced that Tom Hanks would star in an English-language adaptation of the 2015 film A Man Called Ove, and would also produce alongside Playtone partner Gary Goetzman, Rita Wilson, and Fredrik Wikström Nicastro of SF Studios.[5] Marc Forster was confirmed as the film's director in January 2022, with David Magee writing the screenplay.[6] On February 10, 2022, it was announced that Sony Pictures pre-bought the rights to the film for around US$60 million at the European Film Market.[7]


Filming


Filming began in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in February 2022.[1][8] It wrapped filming in May 2022.[9][10]


Release


The film is scheduled to be premiered in New York and Los Angeles for a limited release on December 25, 2022, before a wide release in the United States on January 13, 2023, by Sony Pictures Releasing.[11][12] It was originally set for a sole wide release on December 25, 2022,[13][14] and then moved up to December 14, 2022[15] before switching to the current release plan.
