Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (Hindi pronunciation:[bɾəʱmaːst̪ɾ]; transl. The weapon of Brahma) is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language fantasy adventure film written and directed by Ayan Mukerji. It is produced by Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, Namit Malhotra, and Mukerji–in his debut production–under the production companies Dharma Productions, Starlight Pictures, and Prime Focus in association with Star Studios, and co-produced by Ranbir Kapoor and Marijke DeSouza. The film is intended to serve as the first film in a planned trilogy as part of its own cinematic universe called Astraverse.[5][6][7]
Brahmāstra was announced in July 2014 but was delayed by several years. Principal photography lasted for four years from February 2018 to March 2022 with filming locations including Bulgaria, London, New York, Edinburgh, and Varanasi.[8] Production and release of the film was delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Premise
The story revolves around Shiva, a DJ, who realizes that he has a strange connection with the element of fire, and he holds the power to awaken the Brahmastra, a supernatural weapon that is said to be able to destroy the universe, capable of destroying creation and vanquishing all beings. On the other hand, the forces of the dark are also on a quest to get hold of the Brahmāstra.
In July 2022, a video was released in which Ayan Mukerji explains the mystical universe of various Āstras named as Astraverse.[11] He went on to explain how from the "Brahm-Shakti", Āstras were born, which have within them all the different energies that are found in nature like ‘'fire, wind, water, earth'’. He called them ‘'Jal (water) Āstra, Pawan (wind) Āstra, and the Agny (fire) Āstra'’. He also talked about Āstras that have within them the powers of different animals like the Vanarāstra, ‘which can give to the person, who controls it the power of a Super Monkey’. He said the Nandiāstra has ‘within it the power and strength of a thousand bulls’. But there is one āstra, the last one to emerge from ‘The Light of the Universe’, ‘carrying the collective power of the Brahm-Shakti’, the ‘lord of all the others’, which the sages name after one of the most powerful weapons of Gods - the Brahmāstra.[12]

Brahmāstra was announced in July 2014 by producer Karan Johar. Ayan Mukerji was signed as the director while Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt were set to star. Initially, the film's title was rumoured to be Dragon but was later confirmed as Brahmāstra. Mukerji explained that the title Brahmāstra "resonates with the ancient wisdom, energies and power,".[23] Mukerji also revealed that it is a "contemporary film with ancient elements."[24]
In 2017, Johar revealed his plan to make the film into a film trilogy.[25][26] The preparation for the film started in January 2018.[27] In an interview, Kapoor stated that Mukerji "has spent six years of his life working really hard to make an original story" and that the trilogy would be made over a period of 10 years[28] and refuted rumours suggesting that it is a romantic superhero film. Instead, Kapoor confirmed that the film is a "romantic-fairytale in a supernatural format." and that the film is not something which "doesn't have truth to it, or which is unbelievable".[28]
Nagarjuna Akkineni also confirmed that he would be playing a "pivotal" role.[29] Mouni Roy revealed in an interview that she is the "only antagonist" in the film.[30][31]
Characters
Mukerji revealed that the inspiration behind actor Kapoor's character came from Rumi who also inspired the first look of his character. Mukerji also drew inspiration from Rumi's work: "love is the bridge between you and everything", to build the foundation of the film. Later, he revealed that the Rumi-inspired look was scrapped and Kapoor had gotten a haircut instead.[32]
Kapoor revealed his experience with look tests for the film, expressing that it is a "tedious job: sticking, removing applying, de-applying, and applying again, until some decision is reached".[33]
