Carmen is a 2022 musical drama film directed by Benjamin Millepied (in his feature directorial debut) and with a screenplay by Alexander Dinelaris Jr., Millepied and Loïc Barrère [fr]. The film is based on the musical of the same name by Frank Wildhorn, Jack Murphy and Norman Allen and the opera of the same name by Georges Bizet, Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, both of which are in turn based on the original novella of the same name by Prosper Mérimée. It had its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2022.[1]

The film features the opera's music by Georges Bizet and its respective lyrics by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy as well as the musical's music by Frank Wildhorn and its respective lyrics by Jack Murphy. In addition, there is also new music for the film composed by Nicholas Britell and new songs written and composed by Brittell, Julieta Venegas and Taura Stinson.

Carmen travels from the deserts of Mexico to Los Angeles in search of freedom.

Production


In May 2017, Benjamin Millepied was set to make his feature film directorial debut with the film version of Carmen for Chapter 2.[2] Loïc Barrère [fr] and Millepied will write the script. In May 2019, Sony Pictures Classics acquired distribution rights for the film and Nilo Cruz will write the script.[3] On November 11, 2020, Alexander Dinelaris Jr. was revealed to have co-written the script with Millepied and Loïc Barrère.[4]


Cast


In May 2019, it was announced that Melissa Barrera and Jamie Dornan were cast as Carmen and Aidan.[3] In November 2020, Paul Mescal replaced Dornan and Rossy de Palma was cast in the film.[4]


Filming


In November 2020, it was announced that filming will start on January 18, 2021, in Australia with Jörg Widmer as the cinematographer.[4] Filming wrapped in early March 2021.[5]


Music


Nicholas Britell composed the score and co-wrote the new songs with Julieta Venegas and Taura Stinson.[3][4] Lynn Fainchtein served as music producer and music supervisor.


Release


It had its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2022.[1]
