Das Boot is a German television series produced for Sky One[1][2] and a sequel to Das Boot (1981). Like the film, the series is based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim's 1973 book Das Boot, but with additions from Buchheim's 1995 sequel Die Festung.[3][2] As the original film's plot ends in December 1941, the series's setting takes place nine months later, in 1942. The storyline is split into two narratives, one based on land around the French Resistance, the other set around German U-boat U-612 and its crew.[4] Season three was originally scheduled for 9 April 2022 but was pushed back to debut in Europe on 14 May. A source from broadcast network Sky cites sensitivities to the conflict in Ukraine as the reason for the five-week delay of the season three release.[5] A fourth season (of six episodes) has been ordered, with filming set to begin in June 2022.[6]

U-113 is attacked by an Allied plane in the Atlantic Ocean. Captain Wrangel goes overboard whilst the U-boat is forced to dive. U-113 is then barraged with depth charges by an American destroyer and sinks with the loss of all hands. In La Rochelle, U-612 is being readied for its maiden voyage under the inexperienced Captain Klaus Hoffmann. In the meantime he gives evidence at the court-martial of a submariner accused of cowardice in the face of the enemy, and attends the execution, whereupon he performs a mercy killing. Simone Strasser arrives from Alsace to work at the Police HQ and billets with nurse Margot Bostal. Her boss, Gestapo Inspector Hagan Forster, is attracted to her. The night before the crew are due to leave they visit the local brothel and try to get Mechanikergast Thorsten Hecker to lose his virginity with a prostitute, as it's considered bad luck to have a virgin on board. Diesel-Maschinenmaat Pips Lüders gets into fight after a game of cards. Inspector Pierre Duval wants to detain him but Lüders says he can give him information to avoid this happening. A small fire in the radio room of the docked submarine requires Frank Strasser (Simone's brother) to replace the incumbent radio operator who was injured. Frank asks Simone to pass a document on to someone who later turns out to be a member of the French resistance, and she learns that Frank is involved with them. The meeting is cut short as the police arrive, Duval having been tipped off. Simone is able to evade capture with help from a priest.

Forster asks Simone to interpret as he interrogates the captured female French Resistance fighter (Jacqueline) whom she met at Frank's request, although Forster is unaware of Simone's involvement. On U-612 Hoffmann irritates his crew, and in particular adjutant Oberleutnant zur See Karl Tennstedt, by making them perform numerous drills. He further antagonises them by withdrawing from combat with a group of destroyers when he receives fresh orders to go to a new rendezvous point. It is a propaganda mission that has been ordered directly by Goebbels, Forster having advised Fregattenkapitan Gluck to choose Hoffmann as it would be risking a less experienced captain. Simone, on entering Frank's flat, finds photos of Frank and a young woman called Nathalie who works behind the bar in a local brothel and goes to visit her. Carla, the leader of the local French resistance cell, visits Simone and pressures her into giving Jacqueline morphine so she can overdose and kill herself before being forced to talk. The Police HQ is evacuated during an air raid and Simone uses this chance to get the morphine to Jacqueline, but has to administer it herself. U-612 reaches the supply ship to pick up an American passenger, Samuel Greenwood, but immediately comes under attack from Allied aircraft.

On U-612 Tennstedt makes no secret of his contempt for Hoffmann, sharing his bitterness at how Hoffmann has benefitted from having a famous U-boat commander as his father. Rumours begin to circulate through the crew that Greenwood is a Jew, that Hoffmann shot the court-martialed submariner in cold blood, and that two U-boats were lost at the hands of the destroyers that U-612 had previously engaged. Greenwood, brash and over-familiar, irritates the officers but later is more circumspect when the true horrors of combat are revealed, seeing Mechanikergefreiter Matthias Loidl lose his arm in an accident while loading the torpedo, and then the sinking of a destroyer. In La Rochelle, Simone follows Nathalie back to her house and discovers she has had a child with Frank, is Jewish and has a forged identity. Simone shows her the document which she was supposed to pass onto Jacqueline; it is the circuit diagram for the radio on the U-boat, and it was to be exchanged for forged passports for Frank and Nathalie. Carla brings Simone to their hideout and ascertains what happened to Jacqueline, and gives Simone the passports. Simone warns Carla that Forster is aware of her. Carla vows to take her revenge which she exacts by organising a bomb at the welcoming parade for another U-boat. At the brothel, Nathalie is raped and beaten by one of the submariners for refusing to have sex with him.

As reprisal for the bombing, the German High Command orders Gluck to execute 100 French citizens. The mayor of La Rochelle is asked which names to place on the list of people to be shot. Forster is unhappy with such indiscriminate killing, but Gluck assures him if the perpetrators are found then no-one else would need to die. At Margot's request, Simone visits Nathalie in hospital and finds her with serious head and abdominal injuries. Forster continues to court Simone. On U-612 Mechanikerobergefreiter Max von Haber is revealed to have come from a wealthy background and dropped out of officer training school to be of a lower rank. This creates further resentment in the men, who already blame him for Loidl’s injury, and they beat him. They arrive at their rendezvous point for handing over Greenwood, but as he is about to leave he insults Tennstedt, who punches him into the sea. Hoffmann dives in to save him and ensures he is transported to the American vessel. On the American ship Greenwood's father awaits and it is clear that the father and son have a difficult relationship. The prisoner to be exchanged is revealed to be Wrangel who survived having been lost overboard and was picked up by the Americans. Greenwood tells Hoffmann that it is a trap, with two US destroyers on their way. On the U-boat, Wrangel immediately tries to exert his authority over Hoffmann by suggesting he torpedos the American ship, but Hoffmann refuses citing the fact that they handed over the injured Loidl to the Americans so he can be properly cared for.

In the morning after Simone and Carla's encounter, Simone passes on the circuit diagram that Frank originally gave her to the resistance. On U-612 Hoffmann is ill with possible pneumonia and Wrangel seizes his opportunity to take over as captain, first reinstating Tennstedt and then assuming control. Ehrenberg is unhappy but told any resistance will be considered an act of mutiny. Strasser and Bootsmann Günther Maas also resist and are detained. Hoffmann recovers sufficiently to challenge Wrangel, but despite reservations the officers support Wrangel. Hoffmann is told he will be placed overboard in a dinghy with some provisions. Hoffmann is allowed to address the men, and calls them out as mutineers, Max Von Haber declares his support for Hoffman and claims he would rather die with honour than 'breathe the same air' as the mutineers. In La Rochelle, Nathalie has died and Simone informs Margot that Frank and Nathalie have a baby together. The cell is visited by Englishman Philip Sinclair, who knows Carla from fighting with her in International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War. Sinclair asks Carla to re-think her strategies and attack non-human targets if she wishes to continue to receive support from the UK. Forster and Duval discover that the bomb had a timing device stolen from a factory time-clock. Duval informs Forster that a time-clock was stolen from an iron foundry two weeks previously. U-612 comes across a convoy of ships, which Wrangel decides to attack without following protocol. It becomes clear that Wrangel has a death wish; he orders the boat to collide with a destroyer and walks away, leaving Tennstedt to deal with the situation. Tennstedt takes evasive action but there are destroyers nearby and one pursues the submarine. The episode ends with sonar pings increasing in frequency as the destroyer gets closer to the U-boat.

On U-612 depth charges cause severe damage. The boat sinks and grounds on the sea-bed of the Laura Ethel Bank, which is only 250m deep as opposed to the 4,000m of the Atlantic. Tennstedt is too stunned to command and retires to his bunk; Ehrenberg is forced to take command. Inspection reveals there is an air leak and the batteries are damaged. The resistance cell receives a coded French message from British radio that weapons from the UK are to arrive by sea. Sinclair is aware of Carla's addiction. Carla asks Simone to get details of the German patrol boat times. Simone and Margot visit Nathalie's mother and find that the baby (Anna) has pneumonia. Back on U-612 the men find and repair two air leaks. Hecker admits to Obermechanikermaat Josef Wolf that he did not have sex with a prostitute the night before the U-boat sailed. Some of the battery connectors are damaged, breaking the circuit, and chlorine gas begins escaping from them. Lüders and Haas return with breathing equipment but a cell explodes and they are unable to repair the damage. Forster and Duval question the porter who works at the iron foundry and get the name of the person he helped acquire the time-clock. They then threaten his family and he leads them to the cell safe house. Simone, who was interpreting for the porter, cycles to the cell to warn them and begins removing vital evidence. The Germans arrive and begin shooting, killing a resistance member. Simone hides to avoid detection. The weapons arrive by sea and are collected by Sinclair and Carla who drive back to the safe house. They arrive and engage in a firefight with the Germans. Sinclair is killed but Carla escapes. Simone manages to escape too and arrives back home to find Carla is already there. Shortly after, Forster comes round and forces himself on Simone. Whilst they are having sex, Carla declines the opportunity to shoot Forster.

Simone asks Forster if he can remove Margot from the list of 'hostages'. He declines but assures her that no one needs to die if Carla is caught. Duval visits Margot in the hospital to ask about the bottle of morphine he found, and warns her that she is on the list of hostages. A piece of paper that Simone used to write down the patrol times is found at the safe house and handed to Forster. On U-612 the diesel is getting low, their exact position is unknown, and the radio is damaged. They decide to head for the French coast hoping to find a German ship. Strasser suggests that they could alter the log (which had not been filled out since Greenwood was exchanged, because Hoffman was too ill) to fabricate a cover story. In La Rochelle, Carla asks Simone to get more morphine for her as she is going cold turkey. Gluck informs Forster that U-612 is missing and he should inform Simone; Forster reluctantly agrees. On U-612 an SOS signal can be heard, coming from a seemingly abandoned ship. Wrangel resumes command and leads some of the men onto the ship. It has a small crew of two Germans and four Romanians. The German captain claims that their machinist went mad and destroyed the engine. Wrangel negotiates that if Lüders can fix the engine they can have some diesel. Hecker finds a girl chained up. Initially he reassures her but then, desperate to lose his virginity as he thinks this is creating bad luck, he rapes her. Wrangel ascertains that the Captain is not who he says he is and accuses him of desertion and shoots him. The rest of the ship's crew are killed in an ensuing firefight, and Wolf is also shot and dies. The true purpose of the ship is revealed when Jewish refugees are found in the hull in filthy conditions. The girl who was raped is revealed to be a daughter of two of them. The father asks Strasser to give him his gun so he and his wife can kill themselves. Once the men are back on the U-boat, it torpedoes and sinks the ship. Carla is at resistance member Emile Charpentier's farm and persuades him to carry on with their actions. They kidnap Gluck whilst on his morning walk. On learning about her brother, Simone asks Margot to leave with baby Anna, and gives her the forged passport that Nathalie was to use. Forster receives a note from the resistance confirming Gluck's capture. He orders the round-up of the 100 hostages plus another 50 for the shooting of his adjutant. Back at Police HQ he compares the writing on the note with the patrol times to see that it is Simone's writing.

Duval concludes that the resistance must have someone working on the German side who is tipping them off. Forster suspects Simone. Meanwhile the hostages are rounded up. On U-612 some of the officers begin to forge entries in the ship's log, under the guise of Hoffman. In La Rochelle, Simone persuades Margot to escape with Frank's child, then leaves a note on a car windscreen informing of the whereabouts of the resistance cell at Charpentier's farm. A Nazi patrol carries out a surprise attack on the farm and Charpentier, his father and Carla are killed, with Forster administering the coup de grace to her. Gluck is freed, but Forster still orders the execution of five hostages, as a warning to prevent further resistance attacks. U-612 arrives back in La Rochelle and Gluck meets Wrangel; he reads the logbook and is sceptical of the story, but Wrangel persuades him to overlook his doubts. Simone, expecting the arrival of Forster, ambushes him at her home with a gun. She reveals her love for Carla. They struggle and Forster disarms her, then attempts to rape her but she stabs him in the thigh with a knife. She then helps apply a tourniquet to his leg to prevent him bleeding to death. Frank returns home and visits Simone where he finds Forster's blood on the kitchen floor. Margot escapes with Frank's baby. Forster survives the attack and decides not to shoot any more hostages. The series climaxes in the office of Greenwood in New York, where a mystery visitor turns out to be Hoffmann, who has survived.

"Survival Strategies"
Matthias GlasnerColin Teevan[9][10][11]24 April 2020 (2020-04-24)[lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 3]
U-822 cuts through the dark ocean. From the tower, Lt Commander Johannes von Reinhartz orders to fire torpedoes at a cargo vessel. The victims include women and children. The sudden arrival of an enemy destroyer forces the boat to dive and hide beneath the survivors. This "brilliant" manoeuvre is praised by the crew. In La Rochelle, Simone finds Forster fully recovered from his wounds. Margot returns from Marseilles as a Resistance member. She gives Simone the address of the orphanage in Spain where baby Anna is being cared for. Simone then passes this to Frank who goes in search of his daughter; he is later arrested for desertion but given a reprieve. At the sailors' bordello, Ehrenberg edges away from fellow U-612 mutineers, Ralf and Pips, who fear his betrayal. At a Christmas dinner, Wrangel congratulates Reinhartz for his manoeuvre, and proclaims that the "real game" in war is "To kill or be killed". In private to Commander Gluck, Reinhartz expresses his shame for using the survivors as a shield. Receiving new orders to depart for New York, Reinhartz sees a chance to defect, and writes to his wife, Elli, urging her to leave Germany. Joining U-822 are former crewmates of U-612, Schiller, Strelitz, Laudrup, and Frank; their passengers, SS officers Friedel, Salz and Freund. At a night club in Harlem, Hoffmann meets Frederich Berger, another German, and Cassandra Lloyd, a jazz singer and Sam Greenwood's girlfriend. As Cassandra sings about lost sailors, the truth about Hoffmann and Max's voyage of survival unravels. Outside the Gestapo headquarters, Forster receives information from Anatole Desjesquier about the identity of the German who is hiding escaped Jews. He asks Simone to organise a unit to round up the Jews after sundown. At the hiding place, the troops arrive as Margot helps the family escape through the cellar window. Simone stays behind with a gun to cover them, but she is shot. Afterwards, Forster stands over her paralysed body and whispers, "I wanted you and only you".

Margot takes David Goldblatt and his children to hide in the cathedral crypt until they can travel to Saint-Rémy. Father Michel gives her the name of a priest who could help. At the hospital, Forster orders the doctor not to give Simone morphine because it would be a waste of resource, and he watches her die. Ehrenberg reports the Hoffmann mutiny, and the U-612 crew and Wrangel are arrested. Gluck interrogates the crew but hears the same story from each of them, as recorded in the logbook. Wrangel rebukes him for trusting the word of a recovering alcoholic. In New York, Hoffmann asks for Berger's help to return to Germany. Flashing back to the lifeboat, Max drinks sea water and hallucinates U-612 returning to rescue them. Forster learns from Reinhartz's letter to his wife that he intends to hand over the U-boat and its Enigma machine to the Americans. He suggests sending Wrangel after him. Reluctantly, Gluck orders Ehrenberg to drop his allegations and admit to being drunk when he made them. On U-822, the crew welcome in the New Year, 1943. In the radio room, Frank weeps for Natalie and their daughter. An urgent message comes through, ordering Reinhartz to return to La Rochelle. Frank hands it to him, and Reinhartz lets him in on his plans to defect. They contemplate sabotaging the radio to break contact with Lorient high command. The U-612 crew and Wrangel are released, and Ralf and Pips torture Ehrenberg. After referring to him as the "best engineer" for their new mission, Wrangel offers Ehrenberg two choices: drink or die. Alcohol is then forced down his throat, and Wrangel assures his crew that Ehrenberg will not betray them again because he is full of self-loathing.

On U-612, Pips imagines that Lutz is still alive, and tells Ralf that they are "nothing but cannon fodder for the navy". Wrangel is agitated because his officers are not correctly following orders. Taking it out on Ehrenberg, Wrangel confiscates his alcohol and instructs Ralf to allow him only one shot per day. On U-822, Frank sabotages the radio. When Kraushaar arrives for his shift and turns the wavelength dial, the radio catches fire. He accuses Frank of sabotage and deliberately ignoring a message from Lorient, but Reinhartz dismisses his allegations and removes him from radio duties. Friedel shows the SS officers a suitcase of dynamite that will be used to blow up the naval base in Virginia. In Gluck's office, Forster brings news that Hoffmann is still alive and in New York. Gluck fears that the war has turned their U-boat captains mad, but Forster believes that the war is a "necessary evil". In New York, Berger introduces Hoffmann to a white supremacist group and police chief, Thomas O'Leary. In the Greenwoods' office, Sam threatens Hoffmann to reveal his knowledge of German radar technology. Hoffmann divulges that Germany has been anticipating Britain's development of aircraft-fitted radars that could detect periscopes. Afterwards, Hoffmann imagines Max on the lifeboat castigating him for being a coward and a traitor. Margot and David look for a place for Elias, David's son, to recuperate because he is unwell. Approaching a farmhouse, they find a man hanging from a tree. Desjesquier has hanged him as a warning to the Resistance after extracting information from him. Horrified but believing that the authorities would likely not return, Margot and David stop at the house. A woman passes by and screams at the sight of the hanging man.

U-822 continues towards America. Reinhartz and Frank identify more sympathisers to their cause. The boat stops in a "safe zone" and Reinhartz and the crew enjoy a swim. An enemy aircraft appears and opens fire, killing six men. The survivors swim back to the boat and Reinhartz gives the order to dive. Schiller continues to fire the deck gun at the bombers, not hearing Frank's call to get inside. Seizing the opportunity to be rid of him, Frank goes below and closes the hatch. Realising that he has been left behind, Schiller cries out but is left in the sea as the boat dives. When Strelitz asks about him, Frank invents that he was hit by bullets. The officers suggest that they return to a nearby supply vessel for repairs. Reinhartz asks Frank to make contact via VHF using U-612's codename, Scorpion, to avert any suspicion from Lorient high command. On U-612 Ehrenberg asks Wrangel to submerge the boat so that he could check on some damage, but Wrangel refuses because it would lose speed. In Saint-Rémy, Margot goes to the village to fetch a doctor for Elias, and meets Father Etienne who directs her to Camille's Bistro. Forster, Duval and Desjesquier are in the square, encouraging collaboration from the villagers. Duval spots Margot leaving and follows her. He tells her that he has switched allegiance and wants to help. In New York, Berger reveals that he is coordinating an attack on US naval bases with help from SS officers who will be arriving on a U-boat. Hoffmann could assist them and return to Germany on the boat. He and Cassandra have fallen in love. Flashing back to the lifeboat with Max, he imagines seeing a U-boat passing underneath them.

In La Rochelle, Standartenführer Gustav Eckermann offers Forster a promotion to the east to "re-organise" the Jews. Gluck receives news that Scorpion is to rendezvous with a supply vessel and suspects that Scorpion is really Reinhartz's boat. He orders Wrangel to intercept Reinhartz near the vessel, and, later, obtains Admiral Dönitz's permission to sink U-822, forsaking all 40 crewmen and the SS officers. In Saint-Rémy, Elias's health deteriorates and he dies. On the ocean, Reinhartz spots U-612's periscope and orders to abort the approach to the supply vessel. His officers are perplexed that they are running from one of their own boats. On U-612, Pips accidentally starts a fire with an oily rag, which burns Ehrenberg's arm. From U-822, Reinhartz sees smoke rising from U-612 but does not turn back to help. Running submerged at only 10% capacity, U-822 is struck by depth charges from three American corvettes. Watching, Wrangel orders to load the torpedo tubes, but Ehrenberg warns not to engage the enemy. On U-822, the crew hear one ship sinking on top of them while the other two have split up. U-612 has destroyed two ships but casualties in the torpedo room prevent launching an attack on the third ship. In hiding, Wrangel hopes that Reinhartz will come to the rescue because he is "a man of principle", but Reinhartz does not respond. On U-822, the officers and the SS men confront Reinhartz for not helping their comrades. At gunpoint, Friedel relieves him of his command "forever". Via intercom, Reinhartz pleads to his crew that defecting is "the only moral option" and that there is no victory if more men, women and children are killed. Friedel slaps him and asks Fischer to steer them back to aide U-612.

On U-822, Frank and von Reinhartz's Falcons come forward to help their captain take back control. On U-612, Wrangel refuses to believe that he has been defeated, and Ralf and Ehrenberg are too late to stop Pips from taking his own life. In La Rochelle, Eckermann shows Forster the site plans for the Jewish labour camps which include incinerators. In Saint-Rémy, Margot asks a relunctant Etienne to forge certificates for David and Ruth. At the train depot, Forster demands that Baptiste, the train driver, make room in the cattle carriage for the prisoners bound for the Drancy internment camp. Later, Duval asks Baptiste to help the prisoners escape by stopping the train at a level crossing near the forest; then he tries to loosen the floorboards in the cattle car. Margot learns from Duval that Forster has a new informant. On the way back to the farmhouse, she is assaulted by Desjesquier but gets away. David and Ruth go with Sylvie to the Spanish border. In New York, Cassandra breaks up with Sam for allowing her father to use her. Sam is incensed with Hoffmann for stealing her and threatens again to report him to the authorities. Back in time, Hoffmann saves Max from drowning but Max wishes to die. Hoffmann then goes with Berger to the Greenwoods' office to get the American radar plans, not knowing that Berger has orders to "eliminate" him. While Hoffmann is distracted, Berger sneaks up with a gun but pauses when Sam arrives. Sam has come to retrieve a file that proves his father's involvement with the Nazis. After retrieving the file, Sam is killed by Berger. Back in Berger's apartment, Hoffmann is shot and wounded, but gets away with the plans for Maine.

Separated from David and Ruth, Sylvie runs back to the farmhouse. The realisation that Etienne betrayed them shocks Margot. Confronting him in his church, Margot shoots him at point blank. At the gestapo headquarters, Duval is arrested and tortured to extract information about the Resistance. On a beach, Forster and Gluck discuss the morality of following the Nazis' cause, and Forster believes that both defection and suicide are dishonourable. In New York, Chief O'Leary shows Jack Greenwood the incriminating file that was found near Sam, and assures him that they are on the same side. In Maine, Hoffmann tells Cassandra that he is actually a German U-boat captain; she calls him a liar and walks out on him. On U-612, Wrangel receives news of Reinhartz's wife's suicide. Spotting U-822 from a distance, he orders to attack. U-822 dives, appearing to be hit. On silent running, Reinhartz feigns destruction by ordering to spill some diesel and airshoot unused items to the surface. In the torpedo room, the SS men momentarily seize control, but Reinhartz shoots one of them dead. The dead man is then airshot to the surface along with the debris items. Wrangel, not convinced by the signs of destruction, circles the area until loud bangs from U-822 are heard. Both captains order to surface. U-612 rams straight into U-822's port stern, and U-822 hits back with its rear torpedo, sinking U-612. All are killed except for Wrangel, Neumann and Ehrenberg. On U-822, while the crew are rescuing the survivors above deck, the mutineers take control below. Face to face with Wrangel, Reinhartz places him under arrest, but the power quickly reverses when the armed mutineers take control of the bridge. It is Wrangel who now places Reinhartz under arrest.

In La Rochelle, Duval is executed by firing squad. On the train bound for Drancy, David and Ruth are among the prisoners. At the level crossing, Baptiste stops the train so that Margot and the other Resistance members can help the prisoners escape, but they manage to get only the children out. The Gestapo surround them, and Margot begs Forster for mercy, but he refuses and has them all locked up in the cattle car. Desjesquier is also locked up now that Forster has had enough of him. In Maine, Hoffmann's wound causes him to hallucinate his father and killing Max in self-defence. On U-822, Reinhartz explains that his intention is to end the war, but Laudrup points out that the crewmates he once knew on U-612 are dead. After ordering Frank to fix the radio, Wrangel breaks it to Reinhartz that his wife took her own life. Reinhartz is devastated. Near the Maine coast, the SS men, Friedel and Salz, disembark and row ashore. In the engine room, Frank appeals to Ehrenberg to set things right for his friend, Hoffmann, by helping them escape. Ehrenberg pretends to be drunk and runs the boat aground. Frank and the other prisoners escape through the torpedo hatch and swim ashore. Seeing Reinhartz freed, Wrangel shoots him as he swims away. On the beach, seven men are recovering while another is lying face down in the distance. Frank and Laudrup run up to find Reinhartz dead. They leave him behind and walk on. Watching nearby, Hoffmann imagines being carried away by two men to a lifeboat. It is Max and Tennstedt and they smile at him. It is dawn and Hoffmann finds Cassandra returned to the diner. On U-822, Ehrenberg succeeds in getting the boat out to sea again. When Wrangel asks why he did not defect with the others, Ehrenberg answers with Hoffmann's blade plunged into Wrangel's chest, and the admission, "I can't swim". Near Maine, police officers ask to look at the SS men's suitcases. In Europe, Forster puts away his Gestapo uniform.

A U-boat is struck by depth charges from a British destroyer. The destroyer's captain, Jack Swinburne, has just received news that his son was killed in action, and he is thus set on revenge. After accepting surrender, he shoots dead the U-boat captain and sinks the boat without picking up the survivors. In Kiel, Germany, at a gathering to welcome the Imperial Japanese Navy, Klaus Hoffmann's father and sister, Wilhelm and Hannie, and Hannie's husband, Captain Albrecht Lessing, listen to Lt Commander Schulz's lauding that Germany is recruiting 40,000 new U-boat men and acquiring more iron ore and wolfram (tungsten) to build 300 new boats. At home, Wilhelm receives from Lorient the logbook of U-612. He weeps to see his son's handwriting. Nearby, Ehrenberg visits the site where his wife and son were killed by British bombers. Later, he is introduced by fellow engineer, Rudi Vogts, to Commander Franz Buchner and First Watch Officer Alois Erdmann of the new U-949. When questioned by Vogts about how he now has a post on land and the circumstances of Wrangel's death, Ehrenberg is not forthcoming. The next day, Vogts advises that U-949's sea trials will need to be delayed because the periscope is damaged. Ehrenberg, now in charge of new boats' first operations, takes the periscope's eyepiece to an optical store in town, where he meets Greta Nussmeier who succeeds in repairing the lens. In Düsseldorf, young pick-pocketers, Pauli Müller and Harry Weidner, are arrested. They are not yet seventeen years old but are coerced into volunteering for U-boat service. The "sewer rats", as they are now called, come close to being eliminated despite demonstrating their potential and commitment. In Portugal, Forster steps off a plane with a new identity, Werner Giese.

In Lisbon, at the German Consulate, Forster receives orders from Reinhard Weiss to investigate the death of a Gestapo agent, Dorfmann, and identify the traitor responsible for recent security breaches. At the morgue, he receives the dead man's belongings from Inspector Da Costa. In England, Swinburne and his wife, Daisy, hold a memorial for their son. Later, Swinburne learns that his son's convoy was left unprotected because the escorts had unexpectedly withdrawn. Swinburne's ship, Perseverance, now gets an upgrade with new technology and weapons, notably, the Hedgehog bombs. In Kiel, Greta and her daughter, Fanny, visit Ehrenberg on his boat and they get to know each other better. At the Hoffmann's home, Wilhelm asks Lessing to arrange a meeting with Ehrenberg to get a personal account of U-612's first mission. At the docks, Pauli, Harry and Bernd Cremer arrive for service on U-949. Buchner bids farewell to his mother who reminds him that his family has worked hard to earn their standing with the navy. In front of the U-949 crew, Buchner wants to make a good impression but lacks confidence and constantly needs to consult his notebook. Vogts warns Ehrenberg that Buchner's lack of experience will put all their lives at risk, but Ehrenberg suggests to give him more time. Resentful of Buchner's family status, Pauli, in no time, pickpockets his notebook, which leads to the failure of the first Alarm drill because the commander does not know how to proceed. Afterwards, Pauli boasts about his prank to Willi, Bernd and Harry, but they are angry with him for jeopardising their lives and desire to succeed and feel belonged. After they walk out on him, Pauli gets drunk and makes himself a target to bombers during an air raid.

Ehrenberg rushes up to pull Pauli to safety, and urges him to stay alive to realise his full potential on the U-boat. In Lisbon, the clues from Dorfmann's belongings lead Forster to his hotel's casino and a potential suspect, Dr Beck. That Dorfmann knew Beck is later confirmed by Ines de Pina, the waitress at the casino. In England, Commodore Francombe reveals to Swinburne that his son's convoy was "under impending attack" from the Tirpitz, a powerful German battleship, and, consequently, the convoy and the escorts were ordered to scatter and withdraw to reduce losses. The realisation that the Tirpitz did not show and his son's convoy was destroyed by other German forces anyway makes Swinburne furious. At the Hoffman's home, Wilhelm asks Ehrenberg for the truth of his son's fate on U-612, but Ehrenberg can only say that Klaus was a good man and his friend. Submerged in the ocean, U-949 gets caught on the anchor chain of a moored sea mine, sustaining damages to one of the starboard steering rudders and the stern dive rudder, but eventually breaks free. Afterwards, while Vogts, Erdmann and Ehrenberg are momentarily absent from the bridge, Harry's warning of a new sound from the surface is ignored by Buchner. The commander orders to surface without first raising the periscope to check for clearance, and U-949 collides with a German ship, killing one sailor. Vogts blames Ehrenberg for not reporting Buchner's incompetence. Hearing Vogts's admission that he does not wish to drown and leave his wife and children behind, Ehrenberg realises that it was he who sabotaged the periscope's lens. In Lessing's office, Ehrenberg learns that a court martial will hold Harry and Pauli accountable for the accident. When Ehrenberg protests, Schulz threatens him.

In London, Swinburne is hailed by his superiors as a "proven U-boat killer". Eager to return to sea, he tells Daisy to move on with her own life. In Lisbon, Forster finally meets Beck at the casino and finds evidence that he is planning to flee Portugal. Weiss reveals that Beck's mission is to negotiate for wolfram on behalf of Speer's Armaments Ministry, but he keeps delaying it. At a lecture, Forster drugs Beck's drink and abducts him. In Kiel, Ehrenberg is angry to be complicit in another lie. Lessing reminds him that lies recently saved him from the firing squad. Out on his boat with Pauli, Harry, Willi, Bernd, Greta and Fanny, Ehrenberg listens to Pauli's recollection of his experience of begging on the street and seeing the look of guilt from people who appeared to care but would not help. Pauli is troubled to find the same look from Ehrenberg now. Ehrenberg's guilt, he admits later to Greta, is failing in his duty to the boys. On U-949, Vogts intentionally inflicts an injury to his arm that leads to amputation. To save Vogts from a desertion charge as well as restore the crew's morale, Ehrenberg proposes a plan to Buchner and Erdmann that goes against his wish not to serve at sea again. At the court martial, Ehrenberg testifies that U-949 had "mechanical defects" that "caused it to surface unexpectedly"; therefore, neither the commander nor the crew are to blame. Furthermore, Ehrenberg is willing to take Vogts's place on the boat. His testimony surprises Lessing and Schulz but they accept it and order U-949 to leave the next day in order to catch up to the North Atlantic fleet. The repairs to the boat are not yet completed.

On a Lisbon back road, Forster kills a policeman because he was about to interrupt his plan to abduct Beck. Beck is emphatic that he is loyal to Germany, and Viktor Gruber, the German First Consul, can vouch for him. After handing Beck to Schröder for interrogation, Forster spends the night at Ines's place but he was, all the while, shaken by the memory of Simone's betrayal. In the morning, Da Costa and the police come to Ines's to arrest him but he escapes through a window. Ines, too, has betrayed him. At the Consulate, Gruber's wife, Bettina, pressures him to sign the wolfram contract which requires payment in gold. In Kiel, Wilhelm asks Hannie if she knew that Klaus was alive in New York, and she admits that she and Albrecht were interrogated about his defection. Greta is overwhelmed by the responsibilities of managing her father's business, raising her daughter, and now caring for her paralysed husband. Ehrenberg understands and wants her to make the decision that is right for herself and Fanny. The men of U-949 work into the night to prepare for departure. Finally caught up to the pack, U-947 and U-948, they prepare for battle. Ehrenberg is virtually the commander, and Buchner accepts being slighted. On Perseverance, Swinburne reveals the plan to bait the U-boats with the convoy. All three U-boats are plotted on Perseverance's radar and designated as Alpha, Bravo and Charlie. Swinburne notices that Charlie (U-949) is moving in a "zigzag pattern" and suspects damage. From the conning tower, Buchner orders to fire torpedoes one and two. One destroys a steamer but the other did not fire. Diving to hide from Perseverance, U-949 has five minutes to dislodge a live torpedo before it detonates.

On silent running, the crew of U-949 hear the destruction of the other two U-boats. Pauli crawls inside the torpedo tube and removes a rag stuck in the torpedo's propeller. The torpedo is released with only a few seconds to spare. From Perseverance, Swinburne puzzlingly watches the torpedo trail into nothingness and orders another round of hedgehogs. Harry reports hearing what sounds "like bottles falling into the water", which Ehrenberg deduces to be new contact-detonated weapons. Doubling back towards the Mid-Atlantic gap, U-949 lures the destroyer further from its convoy. During their long hours in hiding, Willi serves meals and looks after the crew's wellbeing despite sustaining a deep cut on his hand. As a last attempt to evade ASDIC, Ehrenberg uses the boat's tendency to run in circles to generate bubbles to confuse the signals. Impressed by Charlie's disappearing act, Swinburne orders to switch off ASDIC. Believing that the destroyer has abandoned the search, Buchner raises the periscope, which is detected by Perseverance. Hedgehogs and depth charges strike U-949, sinking it rapidly. Seeing diesel spillage, First Officer David Mercer implores Swinburne to return to the convoy, reminding him how his son had died. U-949 surfaces with Buchner raising the white flag, but the destroyer has left. In the water to weld a saddle tank, Buchner suffers electric shocks but earns respect from the crew. After receiving news that twelve U-boats were lost in the last 24 hours, U-949 changes course for Africa. In Lisbon, Forster sees Da Costa harassing Ines. He follows Gruber to a park where he meets Gardiner, the American novelist. Later, at Gardiner's place, Forster finds compromising photos of Gruber. As he is about to confront Gardiner, Klaus Hoffmann appears from behind and knocks him unconscious.

After the ordeals in New York and Maine, Klaus was interrogated by Lt Commander Gardiner of the US Navy who has a plan to end the war. It has been three weeks since Klaus arrived in Lisbon and nine months since he first met Forster in La Rochelle. Forster swears to have proof that the wolfram negotiations between Portugal and Germany is illegal, because the trade for the wolfram is Beck's scientific expertise. Gardiner sees the possibility of ending the war if Germany no longer has wolfram for war munitions. In Kiel, Gruber invites Wilhelm to give a lecture in Lisbon, and gives him Klaus's torpedo timer. Hannie and Albrecht separate after quarrelling about Klaus, the Hoffmann name, and their failure to conceive. Soon after, Schulz makes his move on Hannie. Perseverance is en route to the Gibraltar base to join another convoy, and Swinburne and his officers celebrate the birth of Mercer's son. Off the West Africa coast, U-949 waits for a delivery from a Japanese submarine. Erdmann and Buchner dress up as King and Mrs Neptune to raise the crew's morale. While drunk, Harry inadvertently exposes Pauli as an expert pickpocketer, and it dawns on Buchner how his notebook had gone missing on the first day. At night, the Japanese submarine signals to U-949 that the cargo weighs five tonnes. Ehrenberg throws a line across, and Meierjohann, Pauli and Harry make the transfer via a raft. Willi is on deck to help pull the rope even though his hand injury has worsened. When he drops the rope, gold bars spill out onto the deck. On the submarine, a dangling crate knocks Pauli overboard. Harry dives in to pull him up, but runs out of breath as he surfaces.

The Japanese sailors rescue Harry and Pauli. On U-949, the crates of gold are stowed in the engine room bilge and under the beds. Heading to Portugal, Buchner and Ehrenberg calculate that they will need to travel at 23 knots in order to get to the rendezvous on time, but the extra weight and the damaged rudder are slowing them down. Ehrenberg suggests staying on the surface and using the Tarfaya current to gain speed. Meanwhile, the infection on Willi's hand has spread. Buchner drains the abscess. Near the Canary Islands, U-949 is spotted by British reconnaissance planes. On Perseverance, the report that "the U-boat has a kink in its wake" reawakens Swinburne's interest. With two days available, because their convoy has not fully assembled, Swinburne orders a pursuit of "Herr Zigzag" without air cover. In Kiel, Schulz reveals to Hannie his plan to embed a Party member on each U-boat to spy for them. In Lisbon, Bettina and Weiss are having an affair. Gardiner goes to the locker where the wolfram contract is kept. When he turns the key, a bomb explodes, killing him and others nearby. Forster is injured and shocked to realise that Weiss wants him dead when Germany will get wolfram from the new deal anyway. At Ines's place, she removes a shrapnel from his shoulder, and explains that Da Costa has been threatening to make things worse for her brother, who is in prison for protesting against the wolfram mining. Klaus offers to find out why Weiss has double-crossed Forster. He follows him from the Consulate to Schröder's where he overhears their arrangements for the arrival of a U-boat south of Lisbon. Nearby, the Grubers welcome to Lisbon the author of Do Not Fear the Depths: Captain Wilhelm Hoffmann.

In Kiel, Greta's husband wants to end his life, but she is determined to keep him alive. In Lisbon, Ines makes contact with Wilhelm and receives Klaus's torpedo timer. Weiss and Bettina go over their plans to steal the gold shipment from the U-boat. On Perseverance's radar, the U-boat is travelling at 22 knots, which Swinburne finds "barely believable". U-949 has just passed the Canary Islands when Ehrenberg spots a destroyer. Both he and Buchner cannot believe that it is the same ship that was chasing them before. The gold bars tumble from their crates as the boat crash dives. Sustaining damage and sinking even deeper, Ehrenberg urges surrender, but Buchner proposes a bluff. He orders torpedo three to be loaded, then U-949 surfaces, aligning its starboard in parallel with the destroyer's. Buchner swaps uniforms with Ehrenberg, and all, except for Ehrenberg and Willi, abandon ship. From Perseverance, Mercer notices that the white flag is not raised. Swinburne takes his boarding party across and greets Ehrenberg, believing him to be the commander. In the torpedo room, Pauli crawls out of tube one and waits for the signal. In the water, Buchner relays the order for the men to swim to the stern. Mercer is alarmed that the U-boat has rotated and its bow is pointing toward Perseverance. "Now!", Buchner orders and they all sing Erika, a popular German marching song. When they get to the end of the first verse, Pauli fires torpedo three, and it destroys Perseverance. From the tower, Swinburne watches in horror. The crew of U-949 regain control of their boat, and Ehrenberg promises to save the British crew. Swinburne commends Ehrenberg for his skills but points out that his victory is dishonourable. Ehrenberg believes that war "strips us all of honour". When U-949 reaches the neutral waters of Portugal and must dive, Swinburne wishes to go down with his ship. Ehrenberg salutes him. As U-949 submerges, Swinburne recites the Sailor's Psalm and imagines being reunited with his wife and son.

U-949 releases the British crew two miles off the coast of Portugal. Forster deduces that Weiss plans to steal the gold, and asks Ines to get Da Costa to intercept. At night, Forster and Klaus wait at the bay. Weiss and Schröder arrive with trucks. Buchner steps off U-949 and asks Weiss for the password: "Danzig". The crew form a line to pass the gold bars down to the trucks. Pauli jokingly asks Schröder to help them, but the disgraced former U-boat officer takes offence. While Weiss rewards the crew with beer, Klaus discovers a schematic drawing of a U-boat inside a truck, and warns the crew that they are in danger. Buchner orders retreat. Aiming his gun at Pauli, Schröder yells insults, "You're not real U-boat men!". Klaus puts him down. Seeing Buchner in the tower, Klaus salutes him and Buchner returns the salute. Da Costa arrives in time to end the conflict and takes five gold bars for himself. Afterwards, he informs Gruber that the Portuguese authorities have received the gold for the wolfram. Bettina is shocked that the plan failed and Weiss is dead. Klaus asks Gruber to stage an announcement of his escape from America, then he and his father reunite. Wilhelm is appalled by Forster's denial of responsibility for the atrocities in France and Poland. On U-949, Willi dies "a senseless death". Looking forward, Buchner has an idea for their boat's emblem – a sewer rat, which delights Pauli and Harry. Disembarking in Kiel, Buchner is unfazed by Schulz's insinuations about six missing gold bars. The boat is searched but no gold is found. Harry, Pauli and Bernd feel let down to have been treated like thieves. When Harry jokes about Pauli pickpocketing the gold, Pauli mischievously smiles. Ehrenberg is happy to see Greta again but his hopes are dashed when Fanny appears with her father. Returned to his boat drunk, Ehrenberg finds Klaus standing at the end of the pier. In Lisbon, Forster smokes his last cigarette and commits suicide. Da Costa orders to bury him as a "nobody".

Production

In June 2015, it was announced that a television series adaptation based on the 1981 World War II submarine warfare film Das Boot would be made.[13][14] In July 2016, it was announced that it would be a sequel in the form of an 8-part television series, directed by Andreas Prochaska.[15][16] The series would be produced by Bavaria Fiction, Sky Deutschland, and Sonar Entertainment.[17]

The cast for the series was announced in September 2017.[18][19][3][20] Production began in November 2017 and ended in July 2018. Malta, Germany (Munich), France (La Rochelle), and Czech Republic (Prague) were chosen for the location shooting, which started on 31 August 2017 and finished after 105 days on 20 February 2018.[3][2][1][21] The budget was $32.8 million.[7]

Like the original film, the series is based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim's 1973 book Das Boot, but with additions from Buchheim's 1995 sequel Die Festung.[3][2]

The submarine used in filming the series was the non-diving replica built in Malta as the 'modified' S-33 for the film U-571, also shot in Malta.[22] Footage, sets and models from that movie have been reused for other productions, including Submerged, depicting the loss of USS Sailfish, and the fictional HMS Scorpion in Ghostboat.[23] The replica is still afloat, moored at Cassar ship repair yard, Marsa in the inner part of the Grand Harbour. A special rig was built for the production by a Maltese armoury team, that allowed the submarine's anti-aircraft gun to both fire and recoil, something not done before with a blank-firing gun.

The series premiered on 23 November 2018 on Sky One in Germany.[24][25] The broadcast rights were sold into more than 100 countries before the series premiered.[24] The series was broadcast on Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom in February 2019. The series made its United States premiere through Hulu on 17 June 2019.[26][27]

In December 2018, plans for a second season were announced.[28]

Filming for season 2 took place in the Czech Republic April - June 2019,[29] and June - July 2019 in Malta.[30] Clemens Schick, Thomas Kretschmann, Michael McElhatton and Ulrich Matthes joined the cast for the second season.[31]

Music

For the opening theme, composer Matthias Weber[32] incorporates parts of Klaus Doldinger's anthem for the 1981 film, but adds "a simple piano theme" and "an underlying bass pulse".[33] For the remainder of the score, Weber uses predominantly the new sounds of the Haken Continuum, which is also in line with Doldinger's use of the sounds of the 1980s' electronic and experimental music.[34]

Critical reception

Season one is "certified fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, with an overall rating of 85% as of June 2019. The critics’ consensus reads, "Das Boot possesses the atmospheric pressure of its cinematic forebear while adding new depth to its compelling ensemble, making for a riveting international production."[35]

The series received mixed reviews in Germany. German historian Sven Felix Kellerhoff criticises especially the plot around the industrial family Greenwood and their financial ties with Nazi Germany. According to Kellerhoff, this could be seen as a way to relativize German guilt.[36] Kathleen Hildebrandt from the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung recognises that women have a central part but thinks that their portrayal often is too much of a cliché. She sees a highly professional and glittering product which probably would be watched by many, but states that the series could have been more original and relevant if it hadn't cared so much about getting good audience numbers.[37] Thomas Klein (Berliner Zeitung) writes that there are no Nazis in Das Boot, that no one is screaming "Heil Hitler" and that convinced party members are nowhere to be seen. According to him, Das Boot is emphasising internationally common and smooth drama. He thinks that it is obvious that this series is not so much about German history but more about the commercialisation of a famous brand. He closes his review by quoting the character Greenwood: "War is nevertheless just a rip-off" and states: "That is exactly the way [...] Das Boot feels like".[38]
