Chronology
Preceded byGossip Girl (2007–2012)

It was given a straight-to-series order in July 2019 by HBO Max. Filming takes place in New York City and was originally scheduled to begin in March 2020 before being delayed until November 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gossip Girl premiered on HBO Max on July 8 to mixed reviews, and broke the record for the most-watched HBO Max original series over its launch weekend.[1] The first season consisted of 12 episodes, split into two six-episode parts, with the second half debuting on November 25, 2021. In September 2021, the series was renewed for a second season which is set to premiere on December 1, 2022.

Premise

Nearly a decade after the conclusion of the original series, a new cast of Manhattan private schoolers takes the lead under the watchful eye of Gossip Girl, while demonstrating how much social media – and the landscape of New York City itself – has changed in the intervening years. Gossip Girl is slated to feature more adult content than the original on The CW, owing to the relaxed standards of the HBO Max streaming service. The series is also slated to be more diverse, with non-white leads and LGBT characters.[2]

In regard to continuity, executive producer and showrunner Joshua Safran stated that it is officially in the same continuity of the original Gossip Girl series. However, rather than a direct continuation of the story, it is instead set in the same world where previous characters existed and can be freely referenced and potentially reappear, but stars a different set of characters from a different point of view.

As the students return to school after the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of worn-out teachers create an Instagram account as the omniscient and anonymous "Gossip Girl" to take back power from their teenaged tormentors. Determined to start a feud that rivals that of former students Blair and Serena, the teachers set their sights on Julien Calloway, an influencer and student who has secretly paid off the staff to have her younger half-sister, Zoya, admitted. Julien and Zoya are finally united, but keep their long history of social media messaging a secret from their fathers and Julien's friends. After Julien invites Zoya into her group of friends, "Gossip Girl" exposes their secret friendship and how Julien paid for Zoya to receive a scholarship before catching a picture of Zoya and Julien's boyfriend, Obie, and claiming the two to be secret lovers. Julien develops a plan to clear Zoya's name at her fashion show, but Monet and Luna secretly concoct a scheme that gets Zoya kicked out. After Julien does not help Zoya, the two denounce their friendship as Zoya announces her plan to overthrow Julien and becomes close with Obie after he dumps Julien. Meanwhile, Audrey and Aki both develop attractions to Max.

As the teachers prepare for parent–teacher conferences, Audrey is disappointed after her mother, Kiki, fails to show up. Audrey convinces Kiki to attend the school's black-tie fundraiser, but is enraged when Kiki becomes drunk and acts inappropriately. Meanwhile, Obie attempts to form a relationship with Zoya. After "Gossip Girl" posts a picture of the two together, Julien photoshops a picture of herself and Obie together, causing "Gossip Girl" to be denounced as a liar. When it appears Zoya will have to leave the school, Julien steps in to apologize to Zoya and convince their fathers to let Zoya stay. Elsewhere, Max sets his sights on Rafa despite the fact he is a teacher. He makes multiple advances, including making out with Aki at a bathhouse to make Rafa jealous, before Rafa agrees that they can hook up after Max graduates. Audrey then sleeps with Max after she is angered by Aki.

"Gossip Girl" posts about students cheating in relationships, and both Audrey and Aki are convinced the post is about their own affairs with Max. Max asks Aki to create a fake dating profile under the guise of Rafa to catch his father in the act, and Max and Julien secretly invite Rafa and Lola to the opening night of a Broadway play. Max exposes Roy's cheating to Gideon and, heartbroken and high, reveals Aki and Audrey's infidelities to the two before staying the night on Rafa's couch. Julien and Davis agree that he no longer needs to hide Lola. Meanwhile, the school hires an intelligence team to crack down on "Gossip Girl". Kate begins to complain about the workload of running "Gossip Girl" and Jordan and Wendy convince her to let them take some of the workload of "Gossip Girl". After Zoya accuses Julien of trying to get her and Nick evicted from their apartment, Julien decides to take her down, with Luna and Monet suggesting she throw a party. Zoya throws her own party in contest with Julien's and enlists the help of Milo Sparks, Georgina Sparks's son from the original Gossip Girl series. Nick and Davis decide to merge the parties together after their daughters attempt to overthrow each other's party. At the party, Julien publicly humiliates Zoya by showing a video, given to her by “Gossip Girl”, which involves Zoya destroying the school property of her old school in Buffalo. After a student brings a gun to school, ”Gossip Girl” lands in hot water leading Kate to hold off posting on “Gossip Girl”, much to Jordan and Wendy’s disapproval. Now that they’ve reconciled, Julien is destined to prove to her audience that she and Zoya are actually friends and plans for them to wear a sister-duo costume at the annual Halloween party, “Hulaween”. Obie starts having doubts about his relationship with Zoya after she becomes distant. After meeting a guy named, Simon, on the bus, Zoya likes the thought of having a friend of her own, which further feeds into Obie’s doubts. Kiki informs Audrey that they cannot afford to stay in the city and have to move which leads to an argument between them. Pippa and Bianca, rivals to Julien from another school, use the gun incident to gain sympathy, leaving Julien and Zoya to think of a costume that would outshine them at Hulaween. Jordan continues posting on “Gossip Girl” despite Kate’s orders to stop, leaving her with no choice but to deactivate the “Gossip Girl” Instagram account. Aki confronts Max about seeing Rafa, to which Max shrugs him off. Aki then confronts Rafa, who threatens him. Audrey attempts to convince her mother not to move by inviting over Kiki's old friends but this backfires when they humiliate her by discussing her recent failings. Julien and Zoya decide to dress up as Beyoncé and Solange Knowles at Hulaween, only to find out someone had tipped off the attendees to dress up just like them. The tip off works in Pippa and Bianca's favor as they dress up as Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen from the original Gossip Girl series. Julien and Zoya then become Chuck Bass and Dan Humphrey, Blair and Serena's respective partners, to show up Pippa and Bianca. Suspicious of Simon, Obie calls up Nelly Yuki, one of Blair's minions from the original series and Simon's boss, to expose him. Zoya finds out Simon was an insider, only befriending Zoya to gather information to back up his assumption that she is "Gossip Girl". Later on, Max talks to a St. Jude's graduate, who informs him that Rafa sleeps with a new student every year, resulting in Max confronting Rafa and breaking off their affair. Luna discovers Monet was the tip off and confronts her with Julien, fracturing their friendship. Audrey receives a call notifying her that Kiki is in the hospital. After receiving some advice from Nick, Kate sets new boundaries on "Gossip Girl", ultimately turning off the comments to all posts for the foreseeable future.

Kate aims to expand "Gossip Girl" and grows closer to Nick, lying to Jordan and Wendy that she is doing it to get more information about Zoya and Julien. Obie's mother comes to town and discovers that he has broken up with Julien. At a dinner, Zoya clashes with Obie's mother and Aki's father about their business practices, causing friction between her and Obie, who is unwilling to challenge his mother. Obie blames Julien for encouraging Zoya's behavior and the two argue. An exhausted Audrey accidentally outs Aki to his parents but is called to the hospital before she can tell him. Kiki admits to Audrey that she is struggling and the two reconcile. Spurred by recent events, Obie attends a protest of his mother's company and Julien admits to Zoya that she is still in love with him. The protest turns violent and Obie sleeps with Julien. Aki's father uses his son's sexuality to deflect questions from a reporter. Rafa, frustrated at being rejected by Max, spreads lies about him using "Gossip Girl". Max encourages Roy to reconcile with Gideon, confesses his affair with Rafa and sends proof to "Gossip Girl". Rafa deletes the video but not before Kate, Jordan and Wendy see it. Obie stands up for himself at dinner with his mother and reconciles with Aki. The other teachers oust Kate from "Gossip Girl" because they believe she has lost objectivity. Julien finds evidence that Davis has slept with multiple women who were too drunk to consent and confronts him, though he continues to deny any wrongdoing.

Julien's lawyer tells her that the evidence on her father is not sufficient and a lack of women coming forward means there is nothing that can be done. Davis and Julien continue to clash over the allegations and the situation is manipulated by "Gossip Girl" to get the public to turn on Julien for not taking an official stance. Julien and her friends trick "Gossip Girl" by overwhelming the account with tip-offs of her location so that she and Zoya can meet one of the women from Davis' past but she is shocked when the woman tells her she doesn't want to come forward. Audrey encourages Aki to explore his attraction to men outside of Max, though he struggles when she starts getting close to another guy and they both decide that they don't want an open relationship. Max is uncomfortable when Gideon starts seeing someone new but Roy advises him that honesty is always best, leading him to visit Aki and Audrey with the intention of telling them how he feels. Kate is frustrated with being blocked out of "Gossip Girl" and Jordan tries to convince the others teachers to allow her back in. Julien and Nick are forced to ask Riley, a famous singer, not to come forward about her experiences with Davis because it would jeopardize the case against him, as one of Riley's friends had initially lied and said she was the victim in order to protect Riley from public scrutiny, and call into question any subsequent women who come forward. A video of this is posted on "Gossip Girl" and news begins to circulate that Julien is trying to silence survivors to protect her father.
