Pearl will have its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival in September 3, 2022, and is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 16, 2022, by A24.[1]
Set during World War I in 1918 and explores the origins of Pearl, the villainous character from X.[2] The events take place prior to the previous film, and explore how the cabin, where the "massacre of X" takes place, was once used as a boarding house during the war.[3][4]
Feeling trapped at the isolated family farm, Pearl is tasked with attending to her ailing comatose father, while under the harsh micromanagement of her cruel mother. Lusting after the glamorous life she has seen depicted in the movies, a collision of her ambitions, temptations, and repressions arrive creating the villain she feared she would become.[1]
Additionally, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro have been cast in undisclosed roles.[5]
Ti West began writing a script for the prequel film, during production on X. Developed from a story he collaborated on with Mia Goth, the filmmaker stated that the project was seen as a potential film, while believing that it may simply serve as a backstory for Goth's role as Pearl in the first movie.[6] Inspired to continue working following the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on the cinema industry, West stated that he intended to begin production immediately following wrapping on the previous installment. West stated that he had pitched his idea of a new franchise to A24 and was surprised when they green-lit his projects. The filmmaker stated that he intends each film to have its own distinct style and genre of horror. Describing his approach to each movie, he stated that X was heavily influenced by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise and works of Mario Bava, exploring how the rise of independent filmmaking affected society, while Pearl will be a melodrama meets the Technicolor style of Mary Poppins made as a "demented Disney movie" and based on the works of Douglas Sirk, exploring how Hollywood filmmaking influenced people. West stated that he intends to continue this trend, with future installments. The movie is a joint-venture production between A24 and Little Lamb Productions.[6][7][8][4][9]
With the release of the first poster, it was announced that West would once again serve as film editor alongside his other production roles. Additionally, Eliott Rocket returns as cinematographer, while Tyler Bates and Tim Williams will serve as co-composers for the film's score.[1]
Mia Goth will reprise her role as a younger version of Pearl, the elderly woman from the first movie.[8][4][9][6] In July 2022, it was revealed that David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro would feature as the supporting cast.[5]
Principal photography was revealed to have commenced in secret immediately following the completed photography on X. Filming commenced in New Zealand, and filmed back-to-back with the first movie. West worked with the production crew of Avatar: The Way of Water, who were taking a break from production on that film at the time. West stated that as the production crew had already completed their required self-isolation, together they worked safely and efficiently during the pandemic. The filmmaker said: "I came out of quarantine and I was like, 'We're already building all of this stuff, it's COVID and we're on the one place on Earth where it's safe to make a movie.'"[8][4][6][3]
Following the completion of the film, West revealed in March 2022 that he was currently working on the editing process of the movie. The filmmaker will go to Nashville, Tennessee following the SXSW Film Festival, to record the orchestral score for the soundtrack with Tyler Bates and Timothy Williams, with a goal end-date being May of the same year.[4][6][3]
A teaser trailer was screened at the SXSW Film Festival, following screening of the first movie. The footage accompanied the theatrical release of X.[3][9][6] In July 2022, the first trailer was released with the marketing tagline of "an X-traordinary Origin Story", referring to the previous installment.[1]
Pearl will have its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival in September 3, 2022 and is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 16, 2022.[1]
West announced in March 2022, that he is currently working on the script for a third movie in the film series, which will be set chronologically after the events of X. The project will explore another sub-genre of horror and will continue the depiction of cinema's influence on society, exploring how the development of home video releases did so. West states, while a viewer can watch each movie independently without seeing the previous film, they are made to "complement each other".[9][6] In describing his creative processes during the development of these films, West stated: "I'm trying to build a world out of all this, like people do these days." The filmmaker further expressed that: "You can't make a slasher movie without a bunch of sequels".[4]
