Production

Benson and Moorhead conceived of the film during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns.[1][2][3] It was shot over the course of a year with a crew of 12. Benson's own apartment served as the primary location of the film.[1]

Reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 90% of 71 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.7/10. The website's consensus reads, "Something in the Dirt reaffirms Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as sci-fi storytellers with a distinctive—and darkly alluring—vision."[4] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 77 out of 100, based on 23 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[5]
