Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is scheduled to be released in the United States on August 4, 2023, by Paramount Pictures.

On June 30, 2020, it was reported that Nickelodeon Animation Studio was developing a computer-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film for Paramount Pictures.[1] Jeff Rowe was set to direct the film, with Kyler Spears serving as co-director, and Brendan O'Brien writing the screenplay.[1][2] Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver would produce the film through their company, Point Grey Pictures, whom previously worked with O'Brien on Neighbors (2014) and its sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016).[1] Brian Robbins, the president of Nickelodeon, said that "adding Seth, Evan and James’ genius to the humor and action that's already an integral part of TMNT is going to make this a next-level reinvention of the property".[1] Rowe said that it is an "absolute pleasure" to direct the film, having been a fan of the franchise since childhood.[3] On August 4, 2020, while promoting for his film An American Pickle, Rogen said that the film would both feature elements from the franchise, of which he's been a lifelong fan, and "kind of hone in on" to elements from his previous teenager-centered movies.[4]

"As a lifelong fan of Ninja Turtles, weirdly the 'Teenage' part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was always the part that stuck out to me the most. And as someone who loves teenage movies, and who’s made a lot of teenage movies, and who literally got their start in their entire profession by writing a teenage movie, the idea of the kind of honing in on that element was really exciting to us. I mean, not disregarding the rest, but really using that as kind of a jumping-off point for the film."

Seth Rogen's interview from Collider on his take of the franchise, by emphasizing the teenage aspect.[5]

In June 2021, Rogen revealed a teaser image through his Twitter page, which contains school notes written by Leonardo, the movie's original release date, and details within the image.[6] Later in October of that year, it was revealed that the film was going under the working title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Chapter.[7] In a 2021 interview with Variety, the film's production designer, Yashar Kassai, elaborated on the project by saying, "you anchor yourself enough in the familiar elements of it so that it is easily recognizable but then you either add or enhance some of the existing charm of the franchise".[8] In February 2022, concept art was released featuring a first-look at the designs of the titular team.[9] During an interview from IGN at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022, Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the TMNT, later expressed his support to Rogen and praised him on his vision of the film for emphasizing the team on being teenagers.[10] On August 4, 2022, a year before the film's release, the official title was revealed as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem through Rogen himself.[11]

Casting

For the first time in the franchise, the four Turtles will be voiced by actual teenagers at Rogen's behest on honing in on the authenticity of the Teenage element.[12]

Animation

Work on the film's animation had already begun by September 2021.[13] Animation services will be provided by Mikros Image and Cinesite.[14][2] The film features a 2D-style CG animation similar to Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and inspired by sketch drawings Rowe drew on his school notebook as a teenager.[15][16]

Marketing

A mural promoting the film was made at Canal and Lafayette Street in New York City, to accompany the announcement of its official title on August 4, 2022.[17][18] Playmates Toys will release a new product line of toys based on the film, including action figures, accessories, vehicles, role-play toys and novelties.[19][20]

Release

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is scheduled to be released in the United States on August 4, 2023, by Paramount Pictures.[21] The film was initially announced for release on August 11, 2023.[22][23][24]

Future

In February 2022, at the ViacomCBS Investors Event, a number of spin-off films were announced to be in development. Each film will center around a villain in the franchise, with the projects being developed by Nickelodeon Animation for streaming exclusively released on Paramount+.[25] In June 2022, Robbins revealed that the reboot is the first installment of a potential franchise, after being impressed by Rogen's and Goldberg's love of the series.[26][27]
