The Very Eye of Night is 1958 American experimental silent black and white short written, cinematography and directed by Maya Deren and her last completed film.[2][3] The film was made in collaboration with Metropolitan Opera Ballet School.[4] The film editing by Deren into a 16 mm format[5] and music by Teiji Ito.[1][6] The entire film is projected as photographed in the negative.[7]

The film was made between 1952 and 1955 in collaboration with choreographer Antony Tudor, though it was not released until 1959 when the musical score by Teiji Ito was added. The film was initially premiered on 3 May 1958[8] in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.[3]
In 1990 a home DVD was released under Mystic Fire Video in United States.[citation needed]
