In December 2019, the film production studio Sun Pictures, headed by Kalanithi Maran, announced a new project with Dhanush, with the tentative title #D44 (the actor's 44th film in leading role).[5][6] The film marked Dhanush's first active project as a producer, as Sun Pictures had earlier distributed Padikkadavan (2009), Aadukalam and Mappillai (2011).[7] Mithran Jawahar, who earlier directed Yaaradi Nee Mohini (2008), Kutty and Uthamaputhiran (2010), with Dhanush in the lead was rumoured to direct the film,[7] while his involvement was being undisclosed.[2] Anirudh Ravichander was announced as the film's music composer in October 2020.[8][9] Initially Hansika Motwani, who collaborated with Dhanush in Mappillai, was rumoured as the female lead.[10] However, Raashi Khanna and Priya Bhavani Shankar were announced as the female leads.[11] Nithya Menen was announced as the third lead pairing opposite Dhanush,[12] while Prakash Raj and Bharathiraja joined the film as a supporting role.[13] The film's title Thiruchitrambalam was announced on 5 August 2021.[14][15]
Principal photography for the film began with a pooja ceremony in Chennai on 5 August 2021.[3] On 10 August, Prakash Raj took a short break for surgery after he fractured his shoulder during the shooting.[16] Raashi Khanna joined the film's sets in Chennai on 25 August.[17] The crew went to film the song sequences in Pondicherry after the Chennai schedule being completed.[18] In late-August, stills from the film, featuring Dhanush and Khanna, were leaked and went viral on internet.[19] In September, a song shoot featuring Dhanush and Nithya Menen was choreographed by Jani Master and filmed in the outskirts of Pondicherry.[20] Stills from the song shoot were leaked onto the internet.[21][22] The film's shooting, which took place for 50 days, has been completed in early-October 2021.[23][24] On 14 February 2022, it was announced that dubbing for the film has begun.[25]
The music and original score is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, reuniting with Dhanush after six years since their last film, Thanga Magan (2015).[9] It marks Anirudh's fifth collaboration with Dhanush and his first with Mithran Jawahar.[2] On 4 March 2022, lyricist Vivek has announced that he will be writing lyrics for one of the songs in the film.[26]
It is reported that the film is scheduled for theatrical release .[27]
The satellite rights of the film were bought by Sun TV and the streaming rights of the film were acquired by Sun NXT and Netflix respectively.[citation needed]
