A young woman (Petsch), drives across the country with her longtime boyfriend (Gutierrez), as the pair begin a new life together in the Pacific Northwest. Along the way, their car breaks down and they are forced to spend the night in an isolated Airbnb home. Through the night they are terrorized by three murderous masked strangers.[1][2]
Additionally, according to Eda Kowan who serves as Lionsgate’s EVP of Acquisitions & Co-Productions, the three psycho-social masked killer: the Man in the Mask, Dollface, and Pin-Up Girl will appear in the movie by as-of-yet undisclosed actors.[7]
In August 2022, producer Roy Lee announced that three sequels would consecutively enter production beginning in September of the same year. Though the director was not announced at the time, Lee stated that the filmmaker attached to the projects is well known among horror movie fans. After discussing the projects with Bloody Disgusting, the company remarked that the project is similar to Netflix's The Fear Street film series in that it is the only other time that a horror movie and its sequels had been completed in this manner.[8] Renny Harlin was revealed as director for at least one of the sequels, though he was in negotiations to perhaps serve in that capacity on each of the movies.[9]
Later that month Harlin was officially announced as director on the three upcoming films; the first of the new trilogy, from a script written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland. Courtney Solomon, Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Charlie Dombeck, and Alastair Birlingham will serve as producers on the three movies, while Andrei Boncea, Dorothy Canton, and Roy Lee are slated to be executive producers. Though tabloids announced the projects as a "remake", the new trilogy is intended to be a relaunch of the series with producer Canton stating that the trilogy is intended to introduce new audiences to "world of The Strangers". Solomon stated that when they began the project the intent was to tell a bigger story than before, respecting what fans of the series expect, but also to "expand that world". The producer describes the three movies as a "character study", compared to the previous two films. The trilogy will be produced by Lionsgate Films and Frame Film,[10] and will be distributed by Lionsgate Entertainment.[1][2][11][10][12][13][14][15]
Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez were cast in the lead roles, while Gabriel Basso will appear in a supporting role.[1][2] In October 2022, Ema Horvath was announced to be a part of the cast.[4], and in November 2022, Rachel Shenton was announced to be playing Debbie, the sister of Petsch's character.[5] Later that month, Ella Bruccoleri, Brooke Lena Johnson and Ryan Brown were all announced as joining the cast.[6]
Principal photography was revealed to have commenced on September 13, 2022 in Bratislava, Slovakia.[1]
The untitled film will be distributed on an as-of-yet unspecified date, by Lionsgate Entertainment.[1][2]
Two additional films will be produced back-to-back, with Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez reprising their respective roles.[1][2][8][9][11][10][13][14][15]
