Development

In March 2018, the director duo Pushkar–Gayathri were confirmed to be directing a Hindi remake of their Tamil film Vikram Vedha (2017), to be produced again by YNOT Studios; the project would be co-produced by Plan C Studios.[3] Pushkar–Gayathri intended for the remake to maintain the "gritty" tone that the original film had,[4] while Neeraj Pandey, the creative producer, would also be writing the screenplay.[5] Although Pandey had previously avoided working on remakes because of his preference to write original material, he was interested in working on this project because of its parallels to Vikramaditya and Betal from the folktale collection Baital Pachisi, which he felt was not yet done in Hindi cinema.[6]

Casting

Initially, Shah Rukh Khan was approached to play one of the lead roles, but declined.[7] In August 2019, it was announced that Saif Ali Khan and Aamir Khan (no relation) would play the titular roles of the police officer Vikram and the gangster Vedha respectively.[8] Saif differentiated Vikram from Sartaj Singh, another police officer he played in the web series Sacred Games, saying Vikram is "much more dynamic, confident and strong" than Singh who was suicidal, and constantly picked on by others.[9]

After production delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India during which the writers also re-worked on the script, Aamir left the project in December 2020 reportedly due to scripting satisfactory issues.[10] Shortly thereafter, the makers signed Hrithik Roshan to replace him.[11] Since his character, Vedha Betaal, is from Kanpur, Roshan decided to speak with an Awadhi accent.[12] In July 2021, Radhika Apte signed on to play Vikram's lawyer wife,[13] and a month later, Rohit Saraf signed on to play Vedha's brother.[14] In September, Sharib Hashmi was cast in an undisclosed role,[15] later revealed to be Babloo.[16]

Filming

Principal photography was initially planned to begin in mid-2020, when Aamir Khan was in the cast.[17] After Roshan replaced him, it was to have begun in June 2021,[18] but ultimately began on 15 October that year, with the first schedule taking place in Abu Dhabi.[19][20] Before the schedule began, part of the sets originally built for Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) were reworked by Vikram Vedha's crew to resemble Lucknow and Kanpur.[21] After the schedule ended within 27 working days, the second schedule began in Lucknow in early December.[22][23] Saif Ali Khan finished his portions of the schedule by the end of the month.[24] Apte, whose schedule was only 10 days, finished filming most of her portions by 26 April 2022.[25]

Music

The music is composed by Vishal–Shekhar, with lyrics by Manoj Muntashir.[26]

Release

Vikram Vedha is scheduled to be released in theatres on 30 September 2022.[27][28]
