Brahmāstra was announced in July 2014 but was delayed by several years. Principal photography lasted for five years from February 2018 to March 2022 with filming locations including Bulgaria, London, New York, Edinburgh, and Varanasi.[13] Production and release of the film was delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the film is produced by Namit Malhotra and Prime Focus the films VFX work has been done by their company DNEG.[3] The film is scheduled for release on 9 September 2022 in standard formats, 3D, and IMAX 3D, by Star Studios, with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures serving as its global distributor.[4]

Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva is the first film produced under the Star Studios name following the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney.[14]

Premise

The story revolves around Shiva, a DJ, who emerges as the fire element, and holds the power to awaken the Brahmastra, a supernatural weapon that is said to be able to destroy the universe, capable of destroying creation and vanquishing all beings. On the other hand, the forces of the dark are also on a quest to get hold of the Brahmāstra. On 13 July 2022, a video was released in which Ayan Mukerji explains the mystical universe of various Āstras named as Astraverse.[15] He went on to explain how from this "Braham-shakti", āstras were born, which have within them all the different energies that are found in nature like ‘'fire, wind, water, earth'’. He called them ‘'Jal (water) Āstra, Pawan (wind) Āstra, and the Agny (fire) Āstra'’. He also talked about āstras that have within them the powers of different animals like the Vanarāstra, ‘which can give to the person, who controls it the power of a Super Monkey’. He said the Nandiāstra has ‘within it the power and strength of a thousand bulls’. But there is one āstra, the last one to emerge from ‘The Light of the Universe’, ‘carrying its collective’, the ‘lord of all the others’, which the sages named after one of the most powerful weapons of Gods - the Brahmāstra. Development

Brahmāstra was announced in July 2014 by producer Karan Johar. Ayan Mukerji was signed as the director while Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt were set to star. Initially, the film's title was rumoured to be Dragon but was later confirmed as Brahmāstra. Mukerji explained that the title Brahmāstra "resonates with the ancient wisdom, energies and power,".[26] Mukerji also revealed that it is a "contemporary film with ancient elements."[27]

In 2017, Johar revealed his plan to make the film into a film trilogy.[28][29] The preparation for the film started in January 2018.[30] In an interview, Kapoor stated that Mukerji "has spent six years of his life working really hard to make an original story" and that the trilogy would be made over a period of 10 years[31] and refuted rumours suggesting that it is a romantic superhero film. Instead, Kapoor confirmed that the film is a "romantic-fairytale in a supernatural format." and that the film is not something which "doesn't have truth to it, or which is unbelievable".[31]

Nagarjuna Akkineni also confirmed that he would be playing a "pivotal" role.[32] Mouni Roy revealed in an interview that she is the "only antagonist" in the film.[33][34]

Characters

Mukerji revealed that the inspiration behind actor Kapoor's character came from Rumi who also inspired the first look of his character. Mukerji also drew inspiration from Rumi's work: "love is the bridge between you and everything", to build the foundation of the film. Later, he revealed that the Rumi-inspired look was scrapped and Kapoor had gotten a haircut instead.[35]

Kapoor revealed his experience with look tests for the film, expressing that it is a "tedious job: sticking, removing applying, de-applying, and applying again, until some decision is reached".[36]

Filming

Principal photography began in February 2018 with the commencement of the first schedule of the film on 24 February 2018. The first schedule of the film was wrapped up in Bulgaria on 24 March 2018.[37] The second schedule of filming continued in said country and then London on 8 July 2018,[38] in New York in late July,[39] and then back in Bulgaria by the end of the month.[40][41] Extensive shooting started on 1 February 2019 at Edinburgh, Scotland.[42] The 20-day schedule started in the Ramnagar Fort and Chet Singh Fort in Varanasi on 30 July 2019.[43] The filming was halted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic,[44] and later resumed in November 2020.[45][46] Filming wrapped up on 29 March 2022 in Varanasi.[47]

Music

The music score of the film is composed by Pritam, and produced and mixed by Steel Banglez, with songs written by Amitabh Bhattacharya.[48][49][50]

On 10 April 2022, the first song titled 'Kesariya' sung by Arijit Singh was unveiled.[51] Three days later, the teaser of the song was released.[52][53] The teaser of said song's Telugu dubbed version, titled "Kumkumala", sung by Sid Sriram was unveiled on 27 May 2022.[54]
