Liger is an upcoming Indian sports action film written and directed by Puri Jagannadh.[1] Shot simultaneously in Telugu and Hindi, the film is produced by Karan Johar, Puri Jagannadh and Charmme Kaur.[2][3] It stars Vijay Deverakonda in the lead role as a kickboxer alongside Ananya Panday, Ronit Roy and Ramya Krishna.[4][5][6] American boxer Mike Tyson has an extended cameo, thus making his acting debut in Indian cinema.[7] The film was announced back in 2019.[8] Liger marks Deverakonda's film debut in Hindi cinema and Panday's film debut in Telugu cinema.[9][10] The songs are composed by Tanishk Bagchi and Vikram Montrose.[11]

Principal photography of the film begun in January 2020 but was indefinitely paused in March 2020 for over 6 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to production delays.[12][13] Filming resumed towards the end of 2020 and after some other shooting suspensions in the pandemic, Liger was finally wrapped up in February 2022.[14]

Liger is scheduled to be release in Telugu and Hindi in addition to dubbed versions in Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.[15][16] The film was initially planned for cinema release in September 2021, but had been postponed due to production delays caused by the pandemic.[17] Liger is scheduled to be release theatrically on 25 August 2022.[18]

Production

Pre-production

Deverakonda, who plays a kickboxer with a stutter, underwent a dramatic physical transformation for his role and went to Thailand for martial arts training.[23] After Janhvi Kapoor refused the offer due to dates issues, Ananya Panday was cast opposite Deverakonda.[24] The film's score is composed by Mani Sharma.[25] Composer Tanishk Bagchi is also signed for the film.[26] In September 2021, boxer Mike Tyson was signed for a cameo appearance in the film.[22]

Filming

Filming began on 20 January 2020 in Mumbai, with the tentative title Fighter.[27] 40 days of shoot was completed when production was halted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 lockdown in India.[28] The second schedule was shot in Hyderabad.[29] The entire cast resumed shooting for the film in September 2020.[30] In November 2021, the crew went to Las Vegas to shoot the portions with Mike Tyson.[31] Filming was completed in February 2022.[32]

Music

The music rights are sold to Sony Music India. The first single titled 'The Liger Hunt Theme' was released on 9 May 2022, on the account of Vijay Deverakonda's birthday.[33]

Release

Theatrical

Liger is scheduled to be released on 25 August 2022 by simultaneously released in Telugu and Hindi along with dubbed versions in Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.[34][35]

Marketing

The title and first look poster of Liger was revealed in January 2021, and a release date of 9 September 2021 was announced in February.[36] But due to production delays caused by COVID-19 pandemic, the film was postponed.[37] In December 2021, a prologue was released announcing the present release date.[38][39]

Home media

The satellite rights of the film have been bagged by Star Network, while the digital rights for streaming have been bagged by Disney+Hotstar.[40]
