Early life and background

Sanon was born on 27 July 1990[4] in New Delhi to Rahul Sanon, a chartered accountant and Geeta Sanon, a physics professor at the University of Delhi.[5][6] Her family is Punjabi.[7] She attended Delhi Public School, RK Puram and later secured Bachelor of Technology degree in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from Jaypee Institute of Information Technology, Noida.[8][9] She worked as a model for a while before becoming an actress.[10] Her sister, Nupur Sanon has also acted in Hindi and Telugu films.[11]

Sanon made her acting debut in 2014 with Sukumar's Telugu psychological thriller 1: Nenokkadine as the love interest of Mahesh Babu's character.[12][13][14] The film received mixed reviews from critics.[15][16] A reviewer for The Times of India wrote that Sanon "looks pretty" and "acts well".[17] while a reviewer for Sify stated that she "looks gorgeous" and considered her performance to be "okay" for a newcomer.[18] She was nominated for SIIMA Award for Best Female Debut – Telugu. In the same year, Sanon made her Hindi cinema debut in Sabbir Khan's action film Heropanti opposite newcomer Tiger Shroff.[19][20][21] Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, the film had a mixed reception, but was a box office success earning 726 million (US$9.1 million) worldwide.[22] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama wrote that she "looks gorgeous and handles her part with certainty and confidence" and that she "has the trappings of a star",[23] Conversely, Srijana Das of The Times of India criticised her emoting, calling it "more cheesy than sharp".[24] Sanon won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Female for her portrayal.[25]

Sanon began 2015 by featuring in her second Telugu film, Sudheer Varma's crime drama Dohchay, co-starring Naga Chaitanya. She was next cast in Rohit Shetty's action comedy Dilwale with Varun Dhawan, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol which broke several box office records to become one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time, grossing more than 3.72 billion (US$47 million) worldwide.[26][27] Anupama Chopra disliked the film and wrote that Sanon and Dhawan "work as bait, meant to bring in the critical youth segment".[28]

After a yearlong absence from the screen, Sanon teamed up with Maddock Films producer Dinesh Vijan, for the first of many collaborations, in his directorial debut Raabta, which featured her and Sushant Singh Rajput as star-crossed lovers who are reborn.[29] In a scathing review, Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com labelled the film "embarrassingly daft" but took note of Sanon's "statuesque, spirited presence".[30] The film failed both critically and commercially.[31] Sanon's subsequent role as a headstrong rural Indian woman who aspires to a better life in Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's romantic comedy Bareilly Ki Barfi was better received. Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkummar Rao starred opposite her in the film, which was an adaptation of French writer Nicholas Barreau's novel The Ingredients of Love.[32] Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV noted that "the burden of making Bareilly Ki Barfi work rests upon Kriti Sanon and she doesn't put a foot wrong", but Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express thought that despite Sanon's effort, her performance lacked naturalism.[33]

Sanon teamed up with Vijan on two films in 2019, the first of which was cinematographer Laxman Utekar's Hindi directorial debut Luka Chuppi, a satire on live-in relationships, which paired her opposite Kartik Aaryan.[34] Devesh Sharma of Filmfare wrote, "Sanon is spontaneous throughout and seems to be finding her feet in comedy, having a gala time of it all in the process."[35] A commercial success, Luka Chuppi grossed 1.29 billion (US$16 million) worldwide.[36][37] She next starred in Rohit Jugraj's comedy Arjun Patiala, starring Diljit Dosanjh as the titular character, which saw her play the role of a journalist who serves as the protagonist's love interest; it was a box office bomb.[38] Following a special song appearance in Nadiadwala-produced Kalank, the reincarnation comedy Housefull 4, the fourth installment of the Housefull franchise, saw her play dual roles of a princess and the daughter of a rich businessman, opposite Akshay Kumar. Housefull 4 was a major success, earning over 2.8 billion (US$35 million).[39][40][41][42] In her final appearance that year, she portrayed Parvatibai opposite Arjun Kapoor's Sadashivrao Bhau in Ashutosh Gowariker's period drama Panipat, based on the Third Battle of Panipat, which emerged as a box-office bomb.[43]

Following a year-long absence from the screen, Sanon reunited with Vijan and Utekar through the comedy-drama Mimi (2021), which proved to be a turning point in her career.[44] A remake of the National Film Award-winning 2011 Marathi drama Mala Aai Vhhaychy!, it starred her in the titular role of an aspiring actress who becomes a surrogate mother.[45] The film was released digitally on Netflix and JioCinema. Taran Adarsh wrote, "Sanon delivers a very entertaining performance. This is surely her most accomplished performance and is sure to get appreciation from all quarters."[46] Mashable India called the performance her career-best saying, "Sanon has outdone herself. In fact, as you see her shoulder the film with her craft, you will also see her deliver her career best performance; Mimi is Sanon's labour of love all the way".[47] For her performance in the film, she won the IIFA Award for Best Actress and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.[48][49]

Sanon's next release was Abhishek Jain's comedy Hum Do Hamare Do opposite Rao, also produced by Vijan, which premiered on Disney+ Hotstar.[50] NDTV's Saibal Chatterjee found hers to be "the noteworthy performance in [the] unfunny caper".[51] Her first release in 2022 came with Bachchhan Paandey, marking her second collaboration with Kumar.[52] The film was a box office bomb, grossing 69 crore (US$8.6 million) against a budget of 180 crore (US$23 million).[53]

Sanon will reunite with Shroff in Vikas Bahl's action film Ganapath and Dhawan in the horror comedy Bhediya.[54][55] She will play Janaki in Om Raut's film Adipurush (2023), co-starring Prabhas and Saif Ali Khan.[56] She will also reteam with Aaryan in Shehzada, a remake of the Telugu-language film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo.[57] Sanon will also star in Anurag Kashyap's as-yet untitled thriller film,[58] and in The Crew, co-starring Tabu and Kareena Kapoor.[59]
